4rhodes's Full Review: AVEDA Light Elements Smoothing Fluid 100ml/3.4oz
As I inch upward in age, I need to highlight my hair more often to camoflauge the gray. While hair coloring increases the volume of my fine hair (which is helpful), it also creates hairs on the top of my head to stick straight up, giving me a slight 'Alfalfa Look'. I'm not particularly fond of the 'Alfalfa Look' and commenced a search for a product to smooth down those pesky hairs yet not weigh down my hair in general.
I have shoulder length hair which bends easily. I need to wash my hair daily, as it becomes dull, lifeless and clumps together if I do not. I use various shampoo and conditioning products on my hair and have found that heavier shampoos/conditioners weigh my hair down and do not solve the 'Alfalfa' problem.
A friend recommended Kiehl's Silk Groom. While I do like this product for many reasons (does a reasonable job of keeping my hair smooth), I've noticed that as I am nearing the time to have my highlights done, the Silk Groom doesn't last long on my hair. Once, at an early morning staff meeting a colleague tried to pet down my hair, saying it was sticking straight up.
Note: my hair really doesn't look as obvious as Alfalfa's, there are at most maybe 10 hairs vertically rising from my scalp at any one time.
One day at my local mall, I wandered into the Aveda store and mentioned my unique look. The salesman(!) instantly started grabbing products to start smoothing my hair. I halted him immediately chanting my disdain for too many products. He suggested the Light Elements Smoothing Fluid and squeezed a big dollop of it onto his hands and started rubbing them together. I instantly knew that I would never need this much product, and didn't want to squash his enthusiasm so I let him fix my hair with the fluid. My hair did look good and I did purchase a bottle (which runs $24.00). My hair did not feel sticky or clumpy and the vertical fly aways were gone. I figured that I would try it out at home and if dissatisfied I could return it. He confirmed that it was ok to return the product.
I do like the product and it works as promised. I do use a third of the amount he used on my head - maybe a quarter of a pump each morning and do rub my hands together to warm and spread out the product, then gently tap it on top of my head.
I do not like the fragrance of the product. It smells like bergamot and for some reason, the fragrance really bothers me in the morning. I just smelled it again to convey the scent on this Epinion and don't find it as offensive (I'm writing this in the evening). I will also admit that the odor does not stay in my hair and I do wash my hands after I apply the fluid.
The color of the fluid is whitish/blue and is thicker than a shampoo but not as thick as a conditioner. The pump at the top of the bottle allows for partial dispensing and the nozzle never clogs or dries with product in it (which is always an eww!). As I use just a slight amount, I've had the bottle for about six months and am have used only two-thirds (I unscrewed the top and looked inside because the bottle is so opaque I couldn't tell from the outside).
Since I use such a small amount, for me the value of this product is quite good.
