Pros: natural formula, blends and applies smoothly, good staying power
Cons: High price, drying, limited colors and availability, stained my lips, "cheap but environmental" packaging
The Bottom Line: It may be a natural product, but it's too expensive and has other shortcomings. I'd skip the lipliner and spend the $ on Aveda's excellent natural lipsticks instead.

| kleighb's Full Review: Aveda Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes |
Aveda Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes™ is a natural lip liner which is earth-consciously packaged in a natural wood cedar pencil with a recycleable clear plastic cap. For approximately $14 per liner, you can purchase this product at Aveda Concept Salons nationwide.
Available in 8 colors such as Tarragona, Terracotta, Maple, Jute, Savanna, Fig, Ginger and Red Jasper , Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes™ "Defines and shapes lips without pulling or smudging. Formulated with natural waxes derived from plant oils, its rich, creamy texture blends easily and helps prevent lip color from feathering and fading. Contains no ozokerite, a synthetic ingredient found in many lip liners, or artificial preservatives." (promotional description from www.aveda.com)
I purchased my Aveda Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes in a rich, purply brown hue, aptly named "Fig". This deep color goes incredibly well with Aveda Boysenberry Lip Color plus Fresh Essence, and also mixes well with many other lipstick brands and colors to deepen and broaden your color pallette.
Aveda Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes apply smoothly, and do not bleed, clump or pull. It has good staying power, and keeps your lips looking defined, unless you eat something oily. Overall, I feel that the lip liner is somewhat drying, though. My lips often feel parched after my lipstick has worn off and the lipliner is all that remains.
One other thing I noticed with the "Fig" color is that it stains your lips a bright fuschia once all of the product has worn off. I understand that the natural colorants used have a totally different affinity with our skin than synthetics, and that many natural colorants are actually vegetable dyes. This explains the pink stain left behind, but be warned- it doesn't look very nice. Be sure to have a lipstick handy in your purse to quickly reapply if yours wears off!
In the winter months, this liner is also more difficult to apply if kept in a cold bathroom (which mine is!). The natural plant waxes in the liner must harden more easily than synthetic liners do. This makes it harder to apply. I got around this problem by applying a tiny bit of lip balm or lipstick, and then lining my lips.
I appreciate Aveda's environmentally friendly and minimalist packaging, as well as their dedication to using natural ingredients and educating the public about synthetic gunk such as petro waxes and other petro by-products commonly included in lipliners and sticks, such as paraffin, mineral oil and petrolatum.
While I love Aveda products, and have great trust in their company, I probably wouldn't purchase this product again, for the following reasons:
* price- $14 for a lip liner!
* limited color selection
* somewhat drying on my lips
* stain left after liner wears off
* harder to apply in the winter
* only available in Aveda Concept Salons
* conservative (although unusual) packaging seems cheap for such an expensive product
I'm going to have to settle on 3 stars for this product. If it were more moisturizing, and maybe even scented like Aveda lipsticks are, I might give it 4. Sorry Aveda!
