| brooklynsmum's Full Review: Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion |
Im not sure when we first discovered Aveeno Baby Daily Lotion, but it quickly became a staple in our house. Shortly after our first baby was born six and a half years ago, my husband pointed out how well it worked on his skin. Little did I know then that my manly man would still be picking up tubes of this miracle cream long after his baby started school.
THE TUBE
Even the packaging of Aveeno Baby products screams wholesome. The lotion comes in an 8 oz. (227mL) cream striped tube with a light blue flip lid. Because the tube rests on the lid, the lotion is always easy to get out, unlike many of the bottles of lotion weve tried over the years. Expect to pay $4.00-$6.00 per bottle.
THE LOTION
Also unlike many of the baby lotions we tried, this lotion is quite thick and yet still absorbs quickly into the skin. It goes on smoothly and leaves no greasy residue. I was also surprised by how well I liked using it, considering my love affair with uniquely scented baby products (for me, the best part of diapering a child by far was the Johnsons Vanilla & Jasmine scented powder). Unlike the baby products I am usually attracted to, this lotion has virtually no fragrance and is advertised as being fragrance free. The lack of fragrance makes this lotion perfect for newborns and others with sensitive skin.
THE INGREDIENTS
According to Aveeno, the magic ingredient in this lotion is natural colloidal oatmeal. Looking at the ingredient list, I discovered that this product really does contain oats (not that I ever doubted the claims!), among other natural products. Okay, so I dont recognize all the names, but at least I know what several of them are! The list of ingredients (taken from the packaging) includes:
Water, Glycerin, Distearyldimonium Chloride, Petrolatum, Isopropyl Palmitate, Cetyl Alcohol, Dimethicone, Avena sativa (Oat) Flour (farine davoine), Allantoin, Benzyl Alcohol, Sodium Chloride
OUR EXPERIENCE
My youngest daughter was a drooler and developed a rash on her neck and chest as a result. After spending weeks of layering bibs and wiping her down to keep her dry and rid her of the rash, we discovered that religious applications of this lotion helped prevent the rashes from developing in the first place. It seems that the lotion forms a barrier on the skin that protects as well as moisturizes.
My oldest daughter has been prone to mild bouts of eczema. Usually these are quickly cleared up by regular use of this lotion. When we notice her skin begin to get itchy in patches, we start applying the lotion regularly and it clears up within a few days. There have been times, however, when weve allowed it to get too advanced and it becomes much more difficult to clear up. On these occasions, weve had to turn to stronger creams formulated specifically for eczema, but we still rely on Aveeno Baby Lotion to relieve the itch and moisturize her skin. We also have found that we can prevent her eczema from flaring up in the first place if we moisturize her trouble spots regularly with this lotion.
Like my daughter, I also suffer from sensitive skin and I have been using this lotion on myself ever since my husband pointed it out to me over six years ago. Canadian Prairie Winters are harsh, and this is the only lotion I have found that moisturizes my face without irritating my sensitive skin. My husband and I also turn to it when we find our hands becoming dry and chapped. The lotion absorbs almost instantly into the skin and I notice an immediate difference in the softness of my skin. Unlike most lotions weve tried, the softness lasts for hours and hours. Maybe some day Ill switch to the big girl version of Aveeno lotion, but for now Im happy buying from the baby aisle, if only to momentarily relive those days when my babies really were babies.
