| marytara's Full Review: Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion |
My baby boy (now 2 years old) has been blessed with the same porcelein sensitive skin that I have. Or, perhaps it would be more accurate to describe it as curse that my son was born with the same pasty white skin that is extremely sensitive.
For the past two years, I've relied on Johnson's baby lotion, found in the trusty pink bottle - the same product that I can remember using during my own childhood. But recently, I decided to try a new baby lotion, Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion.
Sticker Shock - Be sure to use a coupon!
Taking advantage of a double coupon savings helped take the sting out of the sticker price for an 8 oz tube of Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion normally priced around $4 at my local grocery. While $4 is not exhorbitantly costly for a baby product, compared to the "competition" this Aveeno lotion costs about twice as much as our usual lotion. I can purchase a 15 oz. bottle of Johnson's baby lotion for the same price ($3.99), before a coupon savings.
Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion 101
Aveeno products are put out by Johnson & Johnson, the same maker of that famous baby lotion from the pink bottle. I've been impressed with the handful of Aveeno products that I've tried over the years. Their products claim to be pediatrician recommended, for what its worth. My favorite product from Aveeno is actually their Soothing Bath Treatment, which is an oatmeal bath. Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion also contains this same colloidal oatmeal. The active ingredient, however, in this lotion is actually Dimethicone. For those with sensitivities I've included a list of ingredients at the end of this review.
Our Experience
We have had a very cold, very snowy, extremely blustery winter here in Rochester, NY. In addition to having water which is on the hard side, that can be drying in itself, the harsh weather conditions have been taking a toll on my skin and the skin of my two year old. The poor little guy's skin was no longer feeling silky soft baby smoothe, even with daily use of our regular baby lotion. I decided that now was as good a time as any to try out the expensive lotion, Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion
I broke out the creme-colored tube of Aveeno and opened up the pale blue flip cap and squeezed out a little bit of lotion. The first thing that I noticed was there was no odor. Sure as its claim, this product is virtually fragrance-free. The lotion is a milky white color and light consistency, not greasy at all. I spread it on my son's arms and legs and it was very quickly absorbed, especially on a few extremely dry patches. I was surprised how quickly this lotion was absorbed into his skin and actually squeezed more out and rubbed it into his skin a couple more times.
But the true test.. does this stuff work?
The manufacturer claims that Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion moisturizes for a full 24 hours. But, I'm not so sure. We've put this lotion to the test, during these extreme weather conditions and my son's skin condition hasn't seen a marked improvement when compared to our experience using Johnson's baby lotion. In fact, I've noticed when using Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion that my own hands seem dry after rubbing this lotion in. I can only guess that this may be because the product includes alcohol. I checked our bottle of Johnson's baby lotion and it also includes alcohol - though its farther down in the ingredient list.
The Bottom Line
Because Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion includes dimethicone, it creates a seal to keep out wetness. The manufacturer even suggests you can use this product at diaper changes. I personally would suggest you use caution when doing so. I was familiar with dimethicone from Gerber's Diaper Rash LOTION (not ointment) which contains this same active ingredient. My son's bottom does not agree with dimethicone, his screams pretty much told me that. So.. we won't be using Aveeno lotion for that purpose.
Even though we won't be switching full time to Aveeno Daily Baby lotion, I do like this product. Its fragrance free and hypo-allergenic formula is one that agrees with my son's sensitive skin. We've experienced no break-outs and no rashes while using this product.. phew! I've found this lotion to be very gentle, and it can be used even on newborns.
We'll buy Aveeno Daily Baby Lotion again (only when I have a coupon), but that trusty pink bottle from Johnson's is still my favorite.
