Pros:pleasing scent, oatmeal, aloe & Vitamin E
Cons:five bucks a tube
The Bottom Line: Offers effective relief for inflammation associated with eczema
This past summer I started purchasing AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream for utilizing on the rashes that were inflicting my face due to the sun rays damaging my face and my eczema related stress triggers. I can find this at both my neighborhood grocery store and Rite-Aid, selling at $4.99 either location.

I believe the only product on the market that I have yet to try is Cortisone-10. The others include Goldbond, Lanacane, Cortaid, Benadryl. I would have to state that in my case the AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream surpasses them all for clearing up the rash and relieving the itch.
This tube is maximum strength, distributed by Johnsons & Johnson. This brand has been recommended by Dermatologists for over fifty years. I highly recommend the body wash and oatmeal packages for the bath as well. This can be used for children over the age of two. For children and adults it should be applied no more than four times daily.
I have always used the ointments that are prescribed by the Dermatologist for the rashes on my legs, until I found that Goldbond worked even better with the greasy feeling, and easier to remove from hands after applying. The AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream is used on my hands and face. I started purchasing this on a bi-weekly basis and have several almost empty tubes.
I recently had a severe breakout and currently using the ointments prescribed by the Dermatologist and taking prednisone. But having the left over tubes will come in handy for my ongoing rashes from change in temperature and regular stress. Unlike the Cortaid this brand does in fact have hydrocortisone as the active ingredient, and not some similar substitute.
The color and texture of the AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream is unlike the other brands mentioned earlier. This is an off-white color, think similar to oatmeal and that fine almost coarse texture. I believe this is due in part to some of the inactive ingredients such as aloe barbadensis leaf juice, oat kernel flour and beeswax.
Lucky for me there is no lanolin listed as an ingredient, although so far I do not believe any anti-itch product contains lanolin, a big plus for those allergic to animal fat. This is also to be stored at room temperature and avoid freezing and extreme heat. I highly recommend placing in refrigerator during summer months for a soothing application on your face. The main purpose of using AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream is for the relief of itching and to soothe the irritated skin associated with either eczema, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis, poison oak and sumac plus insect bites. Also the inflammation and rashes associated with these and coming into contact with soaps, detergents, cosmetics and jewelry. I would also recommend checking ingredients in these items if over time you find yourself breaking out and switch brands to test the theory.
For example I do not use bleach, dryer sheets or any type of softener, and do place covers on my mattress and pillow cases. I avoid tight clothing, wear sunglasses and protective covering when in the sun and when at laundering facilities I always request the fans to be on and stand near an open door for air. Another tip is not to take hot showers and use heat at the minimum setting. My scalp feels much better when I rinse with cold water as it helps my seborrheic dermatitis. I always open a window when the oven is on so my face does not flare up.
This is one product that is worth purchasing to keep in your medicine cabinet for when the seasons change or a rash appears. If after using for seven days straight and there is no sign of relief or the rash has not improved, discontinue use and seek professional guidance.
When I am out driving in the summer time and walk inside the house I reach for the tube of AveenoŽ 1% Hydrocortisone Anti-Itch Cream. It offers soothing relief and my face feels instantly better and I can focus on something other than my inflammed face and itchy patches of rash from the elements of the weather and the sun.
There is an imprinted expiration date on the box the tube is sold in, this one I have is good until March of 2004. The tubes are easy to open with the twist off cap and then squeeze a small amount out and apply. I keep one in my makeup bag in my purse and several are in my emergency kit.
Now if only Dermatologist would give samples of this stuff
