Preamble
When Jergens came out with their Naturally Smooth Shave Minimizing Lotion - I was excited! I hate to shave my legs and I hate the fact that my hair grows so quickly.
I don't want to bore you with my full-blown experience with Jergens. What I will say though, is that I liked that product with the exception of the smell. For me, it just had a funny scent that didn't excite me.
And that's the number one reason I started looking at other products that could perform the same function and perhaps, smell lots better! That's when I found Aveeno's Positively Smooth Moisturizing Lotion.
About Aveeno
The Aveeno brand is manufactured and marketed by the Johnson & Johnson people. Aveeno specializes in natural type health and beauty products, ensuring that they are tested and appropriate for those with sensitive skin. They tout that they've been dermatologist tested for nearly 60 years. Recently, I've noticed many of their products hitting the shelves, competing head to head with Jergens, Oil of Olay, and Clean & Clear.
About Aveeno Positively Smooth Moisturizing Lotion
Aveeno carries this product in two different sizes - a 7.3 ounce tube and 10.3 bottle with a pump.
The lotion is a creamy white and of medium consistency. The scent is heavenly - I can't quite describe it. One moment, I think it's a bit fruity, the next, a bit floral. All I know is that the scent doesn't turn me off and this is a good thing!
Aveeno's promise: Aveeno Positively Smooth Moisturizing Lotion goes beyond moisturization to completely care for your skin. This breakthrough formula with an exclusive combination of natural soy, skin-silkening soy extract, and skin conditioners has been dermatologist tested and clinically proven to make hair softer and less noticeable. Its non-greasy, fast-absorbing formula with rich emollients and vitamins provides the following benefits to help you maintain beautiful, healthy-looking skin: Helps you shave less often within 4 weeks; Makes hair look and feel softer, finer, and less noticeable within 4 weeks; Immediately softens and smoothes skin; Provides 24-hour moisturization; Visibly improves skin tone and texture.
My Experiences
Aveeno tells you to apply daily to your legs and if you dare - use it on your bikini area. My skin is dry and sensitive and for the most part, not much goes anywhere near my bikini wax until the pain and redness has gone away :).
After shaving my legs in the shower, I always apply Aveeno's lotion to my legs. You don't have to use much to get great coverage. I find that 3-4 pumps cover one entire leg. I was concerned that applying their lotion right after shaving might cause some burning or tingling issues. Not at all. Once applied, the lotion absorbed pretty quickly. It didn't feel greasy or drying. Throughout the day, I never had issues with my legs feeling dry or itchy. When I wore some sort of skirt (without the hose - naturally), my legs looked nice and smooth.
I did try this over a four week period. Usually, if I shave my legs on Monday, I can expect stubble to start appearing Tuesday evening. When using Aveeno, it delayed stubble initially, for another 24 hours. With continued use, I did notice the hair coming in less often and it was most definitely softer.
Eventually, I did get brave and try it on my bikini area. If I try to apply it or any other lotion within an hour of getting waxed, my skin get very irritated. If I wait a little bit, then Aveeno's lotion does a great job - it slows the growth of that hair down making me a VERY happy camper. Waxing, although an interesting endeavor, isn't on the top of my favorite things to get done.
In the entire time I have used it, there have never been any rashes, breakouts, or any other skin irritation. If there was one thing I would change about this product it's that I wish that it hung around when I went swimming. If I go swimming, I do have to reapply this or another lotion to keep my legs moisturized.
I have TOTALLY switch over to Aveeno's Positively Smooth Moisturizing Lotion from Jergens version because it does the same thing and then some. If you have issues with Jergens or haven't tried one of these types of lotions, I highly suggest you start with Aveeno asap!
