| lcyberlina's Full Review: Avent Breast Shells |
As a new mom, many will tell you about the many benefits of breastfeeding. However, very few will mention the ugly side of breastfeeding. The truth about engorgement, cracked and sore nipples, plugged ducts, mastitis infections and so on, is many times found out about on a first hand experience. When I decided to breastfeed, I encountered a myriad of information and products that were supposed to help me along the way. The Avent Isis Comfort Breast Shells were one of those products that I had no idea I needed until someone suggested it to me. I looked into it and decided to purchase it. I am glad I did.
What you get...
The package brings 1 pair ventilated shells, 1 pair milk collection shells and 2 soft silicone backing cushions and instructions for usage. The package comes wrapped in plastic to prevent tampering.
Daily Use...
The shells are to be worn under a bra. The soft backing cushions have a hole in the middle to pass the nipple through and they snap into either the ventilated or collection shells. The ventilated shells have several holes on the top middle part to allow for ventilation of the nipple area and aid in the healing process of sore/cracked nipples. The collection shells allow for the collection of leaked milk during breastfeeding sessions or throughout the day.
The shells are bulky and will be noticeable under ones clothing, thus I do not recommend wearing them out in public. I used them mostly during the first few weeks of breastfeeding, when cracked and sore nipples, as well as engorgement are more common. They help to keep your own clothes from rubbing your nipples and the cushions help engorgement by gently massaging the area, stimulating milk flow. Even when using the ventilated shells, the milk will collect in the bottom part (note: this milk is supposed to be discarded as per instructions). However, one must be careful not to bend over or lay down while wearing the ventilated shells, in order to avoid spillage. The collection shells I rarely used, because I breastfed my baby from both breasts at each session and didn't leak much. I mostly used the ventilated shells, because my nipples were really sore and I couldn't stand my clothes or bra touching them. These shells do help in healing, because they allow air to flow around the nipple area and keep clothes from chafing the nipples any further. I used them coupled with lanolin or nipple cream.
It is important to stress a couple of things:
1. This product is not intended for drawing out inverted nipples.
2. This product will not prevent sore nipples. It simply aids in healing.
3. This product does not correct ones latching technique.
Sore nipples usually occur because both mom and baby are learning to breastfeed and incorrect latching often happens. See a breastfeeding consultant or look for information at http://www.lalecheleague.org/
What I would change...
The nipple opening may be small for some women, causing more discomfort. It would be nice if Avent made the breast shells in sizes to accommodate a wider range of the population.
Why buy...
If one wants sore nipples to heal faster, it is necessary to allow them to air dry whenever possible. The Avent Isis Comfort Breast Shells allows one to wear clothes while air drying ones nipples and preventing further chafing.
