I have inverted nipples and I was told by my doctor that if I wore these breast shields in my last month of pregnancy that they would help draw out my nipples, so I did. The only thing the breast shield did was make my breasts leak all the time.
I wore the Avent Breast Shield for the last 6 weeks of my pregnancy and I still have inverted nipples. They do help with engorgement a little by expressing some milk out but they don't help with inverted nipples. My son is now two months old and I have to breast feed him with the help of a silicone nipple shield because the breast shield did not work.
I believe doctors should be honest with their patients and tell them that they don't work for everybody who try them but if they want to they can give them a try and maybe they will get lucky and they will work for them.
By not doing so doctors may give women a false sense of hope and then when their baby is born and they still have inverted nipples they might decide not to breast feed because they think that they are not able to but there is help for women with inverted nipples, I know because I have help. So if you want you can try them, but in my opinion they really don't work and you should ask your doctor about trying something else.
