Avery Marks-A-Lot Red Marker: An Office Essential

Pros:Long life, recaps nicely, solid red color, permanent ink.

Cons:Can dry out if not recapped, ink will stain skin.

The Bottom Line: The Marks-A-Lot series are true workhorses that can be used for large or small projects thanks to the chisel tip

Avery products are a staple of offices and for good reason. They are an excellent value, well made and generally have a long life provided that they are taken care of. The Marks-A-Lot series are true workhorses that can be used for large or small projects thanks to the chisel tip. Rotate it one way and you can get a thick tip, turn it to the other side and get a thinner line. Sure, there are tons of thick barrel markers like the Marks-A-Lot but not many of them have a strong tip to them allowing you to press hard without having it crack or break.

You can use these for pretty much any type of office or warehouse chore; they are great for labeling boxes and the ink won't fade or dull over time. The red color is bright and strong so it is something that will end up catching someone's eye if you use it on a sale sign or to mark a box. I like to use them to make a solid border on the edges of paper but if you are using something that is thin it could saturate the paper and leave it a little wavy. The same thing goes for making repeated passes over an area; if the paper is thin or gets too wet from the ink you could end up with tears or rips.

One thing that I love about the Marks-A-Lot markers is that they don't make a lot of noise when you are using them. One of the worst things to have happen in the middle of a project is to have the marker start to squeak; it can get on your last nerve if you have a large area to cover. The only time that I have had this type of issue is when I was working on the slick side of a piece of poster board. This will write on almost any type of surface except glass; you can try it on glass if you want but keep in mind that it is permanent ink and even if you can remove it with a glass cleaner, you could be left with residue or ghosting.

The cap of the marker can be inserted into the back of the marker when it is in use, that helps to keep missing caps to a minimum. Recapping is pretty important when it comes to this marker, you can leave it uncapped for about a half hour before it starts to dry out. One thing I learned was to never throw out the caps from these markers; when they run out of ink I hold on to the caps in case they get lost or get damaged. For whatever reason I end up cracking a lot of caps with the wheels of my chair. The extra caps don't take up much space and if I do end up losing or damaging one, I know that I have spares that will end up saving the marker.

You can get the red Marks-A-Lot permanent markers at most office supply stores as well as places like Target and Wal-Mart. The best value is the two pack, that costs about $1.29 but if you need a larger quantity you can get them by the half dozen and full dozen. If you are going to buy them in quantity make sure that you are going to have a need for them; having them sit on a shelf for two years and dry out isn't saving you any money. I've never had any of the red ones come out of the box dead but it has happened with other colors that I stocked up on and forgot about.

If you need a red permanent marker to label boxes, files, color posters or make signs then the Marks-A-Lot marker is a great pick. It is relatively inexpensive and you an get a long life out of it if you show it a little tender loving care. It will stain skin and clothing but the term "permanent marker" should be a tip off that it isn't going to rinse off with warm water.

As always, thanks for the visit…
