Sometimes I need highlighters in eye-catching colors. Highlighters that wont bleed through paper. I like a comfortable grip and smooth writing tip that wont shred. A highlighter that I enjoy using is the Avery Pen Style Fluorescent Hi-Liter.
Description
These fluorescent hightlighers come in a variety of colors yellow, pink, green, orange, purple and blue. The 6-pack assortment comes with 2 yellow and 1 each of pink, green, orange and purple. (Since I also wanted a blue highlighter, I purchased a 4-pack assortment that came with 1 yellow, 1 pink, 1 green, 1 blue highlighter.)
Each highlighter has a smooth round barrel with a removable cap and measures 5 3/4" long x 3/8" wide. The color of the barrel also indicates the color of the non-toxic ink. A chisel point writes a 1/4" wide line.
The cap itself is 1 7/8" long with a stiff plastic pocket-clip. A safety feature of this highligher is that the cap has holes built into it so that if the cap were accidentally swallowed, there is a lesser chance of choking.
Avery boasts that the cap can be left off of this highlighter for up to one week and the highlighter will still work.
My Experiences
These highlighter colors are vibrant. The fluorescent really pops off the page to catch attention and is particularly noticeable when using the yellow, pink and orange colors. The color I like least is the green, which resembles a faint lime green color. The green almost seems too tame compared to the other colors.
When a child, my mother taught me to do word search puzzles using colored highlighters. I used to mark words in the puzzles by circling the words with either a pen or pencil. However, a highlighter made it easier to mark the words without having confusing overlapping pen or pencil lines. To this day, I prefer using a highlighter to do word search puzzles. Sometimes words overlap each other in word search puzzles, and these highlighters work well crisscrossing lines without having the ink bleed through the page.
I thought these highlighters would work well on newspaper-type paper, so I purchased my mother a package of them. She highlights television programs in the TV Guide that she is interested in watching. The different color highlighters come in handy for color-coding programs (ex: yellow for sports, pink for documentaries, orange for comedy, green for movies, purple for must see). As a rule, the highlighters do well on the newspaper-type paper. However, if the highlighter is held down too long, it does bleed a bit through the page.
When using the highlighters, I notice that the front and end of the highlighted line tends to be darker and might show a bit through the other side of thin paper. This is because I apply more pressure to the front and end of my drawn lines. If using a light touch, these markers will not bleed through paper. I have never had one of these chisel tips fray.
As a test, I used the highlighters to draw horizontal lines across a piece of 20-pound copy paper. Then I wrote in blue pen ink and highlighted the text using each of the colors. I held the paper beneath the faucet, letting water wash down the sheet. The colors did not run. The most notable change was that the yellow faded quite a bit. I even took a paper towel and rubbed it over the wet highlighter marks. The paper towel showed a faint hint of yellow color ... but the towel did not pick up any other color.
One might think that with the holes in the cap that the highlighter might dry out. No so. These highlighters are always ready to work. Ive never left the cap off of a highlighter for more than the time Im using it, so I cant vouch for whether the highlighter will still work if the cap is left off for up to a week.
The sturdy pocket-clip on these highlighters is well made. It has a great grip, too. I can clip a highlighter to a single sheet of 20-pound copy paper, and the highlighter stays where I clipped it. The highlighter easily grips the pages of a puzzle book or TV Guide.
These pen-style highlighters are comfortable to hold and use. The lines draw smoothly with defined edges, no blurring. Also, the cap, when removed, can snugly fit on the end of the highlighter.

Purchasing
Avery.com sells these hi-liters for $4.74 for a package of 6 in assorted colors on a blister card. The hi-liters are also sold singly (79 cents), in 2-packs ($1.72), 4-packs ($3.52) and even 5-packs ($4.13). I purchase my Avery Hi-Liters locally in either an office supply store, department store or pharmacy. The package of highlighters in front of me doesnt have a price on it, but I think I paid around $3.00 for the assortment.
Summary
I like these Avery Pen Style Fluorescent Hi-Liters. The pen-style barrel makes the highlighter easy to hold and use. The colors are bright and liven up any project. With a cost of about 79 cents per highlighter, these are affordable. I own a rainbow collection of these highlighters and think its about time I do another word search puzzle!
