Make Quick Work of Mailing Lists & Addressing Christmas Cards With Avery’s Multi Purpose Labels!
Written: Jul 05 '05
Pros:Easy to use, extremely sticky, can use Avery website to format size, tons of uses.
Cons:You have to have a dot matrix printer to be able to use these correctly.
The Bottom Line: Stop wasting money on inkjet labels, this box of 2,000 will last you a long time and cost you one quarter what you’d pay for laser or inkjet address labels.
Maybe I am painfully behind the times but I still have a dot matrix printer that I use for address labels and printing out lists of customer addresses for postcards. All I have to do is select print all and it will spit out the entire list of customers that I have entered in the database. Sure it might take a little longer than an inkjet but in the long run I am saving a ton of money using the continuous feed box from Avery. When I did the math I was paying about $5.00 for a package of 200 labels that I used in the inkjet printer, the cost for the box of 2,000 continuous feed labels from Avery - about $15.00 - you do the math and tell me which way make more sense [and cents!]. Avery says that these can be used in inkjet and laser printers but I cant imagine how they would be able to pass through the printer without some type of disaster happening. Nope, these go in the old dot matrix printer or get written on by hand.
Avery Dot Matrix Printer Multi Purpose White Labels
These labels are continuous feed - simply put - they are a long strip of single address sized labels that feed into the pin feed of a dot matrix printer. You can use these without a printer but unless you have a need for two thousand of them, chances are you would be better off buying a smaller sized package than this one. The really nice thing about these is that once you have them fed into the tabs of the printer theres nothing else you have to do once you have created a template and built an address list. This can be imported from other applications and if you have Word or Works it gives you the option to copy addresses or information into the program to print them evenly and within the space of the label. They are pretty sticky so once you slap them on an envelope or package they will stay put and the corners and edges wont peel Theres no limit to what you can use these for - everything from making return address labels to stickers for boxes or to label things for storage. Since you get 2,000 of these per box they should last you a fairly long time unless you have a large customer database.
Another perk of using these is that when they are done printing the finished labels fold over onto themselves so you dont end up with this huge mess all over the floor; you will want to make sure that the first page of labels hits the floor flat so the others will fall in line. I made the mistake of not doing this a few times and the dogs got into them and had the address labels all over them. Yeah it was cute but they didnt really like the idea of it. Theres no limit to what you can use these for - return address labels, fragile stickers, control numbers or even order entry memos. Once you set up the program to print out what you want [font, size, border etc] you can fill in the label with whatever information you want. I use these for Christmas cards too; I just select the names I want [or opt to print the entire list] and the printer and software do the rest for me. The label size is one inch by almost three and a half inches across so there is a lot of room to work with; regardless of what you are working with, chances are this one will be large enough for most standard three or four line addresses.
Formatting
If you have never used these before you can expect there to be a few mistakes when you are setting up the printer and doing some test labels but once you get the positioning right, its a piece of cake. You can visit the Avery website to upload the necessary software to have the module on your computer or you can go through Word or Works and use the set up tools that these programs offer. If you do a lot of printing this is the most cost effective way to go about printing up address labels or return address stickers for packages. Granted you cant print fancy graphics on these but they do get the job done without costing you an arm and a leg. If you make a mistake with a few of these or they get stuck in the printer its no big deal, just start over - try that with a sheet thats going through a laser or inkjet printer! Formatting is pretty simple and even those who arent computer savvy will be able to get the whole thing completed in about five minutes.
Cost
You can buy these in smaller sizes than the 2,000 count box but if you do a lot of printing of address sized labels then this is the most cost effective way to go. Because of the weight of it I usually buy these locally unless an online site is offering free shipping. Office Depot and Office Max both have these for $15.00 - $16.00 dollars which is a huge saving over the ones that are on the larger inkjet or laser printer sheets. Even if you end up wasting a few of these here and there you are still saving a lot of money. They are high quality stickers that dont peel or pull away from packages, paper or envelopes and the crisp white color blends in with most envelopes.
The Bottom Line
I have never had any major problems using these address labels and will continue to buy them when I start to run low. Occasionally you will get one label that wants to be a trouble maker and stick to the inside of the carrier but thats usually when you arent paying attention to the stickers and making sure they are coming out of the box evenly. If you are looking to make addressing postcards or letters easier and want to save money doing it, these are a great thing to invest in if you have a dot matrix printer. Avery is a company that I trust and Ive never had any problems with the labels being dry or not sticking properly but I know that if that ever does happen, they stand behind their products and will issue a replacement or offer me a refund.
As always, thanks for the read!
