You know that things are getting bad in schools when students are getting suspended for bringing permanent markers to school. When I was reading some articles online about the growing trend of homeschooling in America I came across an article that mentioned the Avery Marks-A-Lot Jumbo Black Permanent Marker and that a student was expelled for three days for brining one to school. There had been a lot of property damage in previous weeks by graffiti artists that were writing on anything that didn't move. By simply having this in his possession he was considered one of the guilty parties; the ironic twist to this came from the students mother. When being interviewed she said something to the effect of, "If he would have punched another student he would have been expelled for three days, how can you compare [punishment wise] having a marker in your backpack to punching someone?". I know from first hand experience that these things are awesome permanent markers and they will write on almost any type of surface so you can't really blame the school for banning any and all permanent markers until the situation was under control. Even so, a three day suspension does seem to be a bit much for a first time offender.

These markers are some of the biggest and best on the market; if you recap them after using them there is no telling how long they will last. Most of the time the ones that we have at the shop end up getting stolen or 'misplaced' long before they start to show any sign of wear. The three quarter inch chisel tip lets you write on almost any type of surface; most of the time these were used to write on packages that were being sent out as well as boxes that were being put into the stock room until an inventory control tag could be made up for it. You can rotate the marker to get a thin or thick line depending on what you are using the marker on but no matter how you use it, you are going to get a thick continuous line. About the only downside to this is that if you are a slow writer or someone that stops in the middle of letters or words you will end up with the ink pooling on the paper. That could lead to smearing or waves on the paper if you aren't careful. The cap attaches firmly and securely to the marker, just press until you hear the loud click and you'll know that, without a doubt, it's sealed properly.
On the upside of things, the ink is non-toxic so if you get it on your skin you don't have anything to worry about. Getting it off your skin can be a real pain because it is a permanent ink. My best advice is a lot of soap and even more patience. Getting it off clothing can be equally frustrating; don't try to use any type of prewash treatment or spray because that will only make it spread. Get it into the warmest water you can [depending on the color and type of fabric] with some laundry detergent and let it soak for a while before you rinse it with clean water. I guess it goes without saying that this isn't something that you should let kids use unless they are being heavily supervised. Annabelle strolled into the kitchen and asked if she could use a black marker to make some bats on her Halloween artwork. I was engrossed in making cookies and adding the finishing touches to pumpkin pies and wasn't paying attention to the marker she had in her hand. Needless to say, she ended up with more ink on her hands than on the paper. "Look, now I don't have to wear gloves with my costume" were the words I heard seconds before I almost lost consciousness. Her tiny little hands were covered with black ink. The cute pink fingernails were no longer visible and I could have sworn for a split second that I saw tiny little horns sprouting on her head.
If you are worried about the smell factor of this marker I have to say that compared to others, it's not that bad. There is a distinct scent to it but it isn't something that is going to make you pass out or gag. If you are working in a confined area and doing a large poster or project it might be wise to take a break every ten minutes or so. This will let you get some fresh air and give the tip of the marker a chance to refill so you don't end up with streaks. This marker will write on everything from glass to plastic, painted walls to wallpaper, almost any type of paper and even on metal surfaces. About the only thing you will have trouble writing on is slick or glossy paper. You can use these on these types of paper but it takes longer for the ink to dry and it tends to scratch off a lot easier than on other surfaces.
You can find these in office supply stores for about a dollar a piece; these do cost a little more than the regular 'large' sized markers but if you need something that is going to be able to cover a lot of area in a short amount of time, this is one of the best picks. You can buy them in two, three, six a dozen packages. The larger the package the greater the price break but make sure that you have a need for them before you buy a dozen of them. So far I've never come across one that has been dried out or hasn't worked perfectly but I know that if this ever happens, Avery will stand behind this product 100%. You have an awesome guarantee that you will be completely satisfied with how this performs or they will send you a refund or replacement.
The Bottom Line
Whether you need something to address boxes, make posters or label plastic totes, the Avery Marks-A-Lot Jumbo Black Permanent Marker is an excellent pick. I was really impressed with how it wrote on posterboard [both the slick and smooth side] and left no streaks or overlap lines. The barrel is thick so it might take you a little bit of time to get used to the feel of it but once you do, it's a pure pleasure to work with. The tip rarely squeaks when you are writing with it, something that truly annoys me to no end. On a side note, I'd like to mention that this marker can be used to write on flat, slanted or vertical objects. I found this out when I was writing on the sides of boxes with another permanent marker and it died after about ten boxes. I grabbed this one and it worked perfectly on the remaining fifty or sixty boxes I was working on. I have no doubt that I'll be buying more of these in the future, no matter how many we have at the shop or at home, they always seem to disappear. Oddly enough, some of the local stores don't have these out with the rest of the markers so if you don't seem them be sure to ask if they have them locked up with the cans of spray paint. I wonder how long it's going to be before I have to show my drivers license to buy one of these
As always, thanks for the visit
