Eventually everyone has a need for glue - but when the situation arises there are more than a few choices to make. You can go with the liquid kind like Elmer's Glue-All but you run the risk of warping thinner paper; glue sticks are nice but if you have to cover a large area there is a chance that by time you get the whole surface covered the section you started with is dried or in the process of drying. For small to medium sized jobs I use Averys Permanent Glue Stic because its something that has always served me well. Sticks are a nice thing to have around when you want to glue something like paper to paper but thats just the start - you can use this particular glue stick on photographs, scrapbook items, school projects and even a quick fix for wall paper edges that come loose.
Avery Permanent Glue Stic
Since this is so useful and has so many different ways that it can be used its no wonder that most schools ask for this by name when they are handing out the back to school needs lists to kids. When I was at the office supply store recently several soccer moms were tossing supplies in their baskets, curiosity got the best of me and I asked if I could see their childrens list of things that the various schools were asking parents to pick up for the start of school. There were the usual things like rulers, binders, notebooks, pencils and pens but when it came to glue sticks, most of the lists asked for Avery by name. One of the biggest reasons is that these are non toxic and dont cause as much of a mess as the liquid types of glue. If this happens to get on their clothing it can easily be removed when washed. Once it dries it forms a permanent bond but it wont act that way if it gets on skin - it simply washes off.
You can use this on pretty much anything from copy paper to cardboard, poster board to construction paper. The one thing that I really like about this is that most of the time it wont warp the paper - some glue sticks are too mushy and you end up with bumps or limps of glue that you dont catch. When you press the papers together you see this lump and even if you press on it, all it does it spread it out a little but its still there. You will want to make sure that you apply this evenly when you use it and use straight lines to cover areas instead of circles; if you work in circles you run the risk of excess glue collecting around the edges of the tube - stuff that you get on your paper and leave clumps. If you are working with these in warmer weather try popping them in the refrigerator for a few minutes, they will work better and the glue will stay tacky without getting runny.
It is hard to say how long a tube will last you because everyone uses these differently. When the boys use these for projects they tend to go through about one every two weeks but they are geeks that love working on things that are science, space and math related. Building models or mock ups of things really puts a hurting on the supply I have of these so when I come across them at a good price I always pick up extras because I know that eventually someone in the house will make use of them. As far as a shelf life, well, there is no date stamped on them but so far I have never come across a tube that has been dry or old. I guess these sell so well that they never have to worry about old stock or having to rotate them on a regular basis. I know from past experience, Avery stands behind their products 100% and if you would happen to run into an old tube I am sure that if you contacted them, they would replace it with no questions asked.
Price
I usually stock up on these when they have the back to school sales but I hunt down the three packs [buy two, get one free] when they arent on sale. A single stick will set you back a little less than a dollar but the two pack is about $1.59 at places like Target and Wal-Mart. If you can find them in the buy two get one free packages you can save even more money but if you are a true bargain hunter - back to school sales are the way to go. Most places sell them for .50 cents each or less so stock up on them when you can because they are fast sellers.. To me these are more than worth it, the glue doesnt get clumpy or slide all over the place and they are great for kids to work with.
The Bottom Line
Avery products are some of the best on the market and they have an incredible line of home, office and school products. I highly recommend this to anyone that doesnt want the mess of a liquid glue but needs something that is strong enough to hold things together. If the clear version of this isnt to your liking they do make this in a tinted version that dries clear. This allows you to see where you have already applied the glue so you arent wasting your time covering the same section two or three times. So far I havent had any major problems using the stick but I wish they would have some kind of an indicator window on the side so you can see exactly how much is left. You can sit there and twist the tube until you see the plastic base but that is a recipe for disaster - all it takes is someone to walk by and bump you and you are going to end up with glue everywhere.
