Sticking with the glue theme [no pun intended], next up on the list is Avery's Removable Glue Stic. If you have Post-It Notes around you may want to move them away from the computer while you are reading this, they might get more than a little jealous about this product. While youre at it, tuck that Scotch tape in the drawer too. Much like the concept of removable tape, this might be the type of product that some people just won't get. Simply put, you know the non-gooey stuff on the back of a self adhesive Post-It Note? Well, that's what this is a removable glue in the form of a stick that can be applied to almost any type of paper. Think of it like this how many times have you written a note for someone then searched high and low for a piece of tape to hang it on the refrigerator or computer monitor to ensure that the intended saw it? Having a tube of this on hang wont revolutionize the way you live or get tasks completed but it will make sure that the kids see the note to take the garbage out, the hubby gets the message to pick up the dry cleaning and you see the list of groceries to pick up.
Avery Removable Glue Stick .23 ounce
Looking a lot like almost every other glue stick on the market, this product has a screw off top. I really wish this had the pull off sleeve like the regular Avery glue sticks because they are a lot harder to lose on a cluttered desk and dont get stuck to everything they come in contact with. The biggest perk to this product is that you can turn almost any piece of paper into a Post-It Note. Like I said, how many times have you written a note to someone and then tried to find some way to hang it up so it would be seen. With the removable glue stick you can unscrew the lid, advance the stick, swipe on a line and slap the note onto a flat surface. But if it was just for posting up notes it would have a rather limited target audience. No, this goes beyond posting chores or reminders this can be used for crafts, school projects and my personal favorite making collages.
Since this is something that can be put on the back of paper and allow it to stay in one position until moved to another, you can use it for making designs or for crafting where you need to lay out items and keep them stationary but not have them permanently affixed to the surface. Ive used this for scrapbook pages when I was laying out photos before I started permanently attaching them to the pages, using this allowed me to lay out several pages at once, remove photos that needed trimming or looked better in other spots, not exactly something that you can do with a standard photo mount or glue. The boys have used this when making photo time lines for school projects; they could move things around and work out the best placement without having them slide all over the place or being locked into something only to find they made a mistake or needed to readjust something. Since Ive mentioned that the boys have made use of this, its a good time to mention that this product is waster soluble so if it gets on clothes or skin, it comes off easily. For clothing simply soak for about ten minutes then wash as usual. For skin, wash with soap and water.
The downside to this product is that it looks just like the regular Avery glue stick, the only difference is the color used on the outer barrel and sometimes when you are in a hurry you could grab the wrong tube. The standard regular glue sticks have yellow and orange on the outside while this one, the removable glue stick, is blue. Even though there are color differences that are painfully obvious, when you are in a hurry that really doesnt mean much, especially when the words glue stic are the biggest words on the outside of the tube. The glue adhesive thats use leaves no residue on the surface and theres no heavy tack left behind to pick up dirty or other pages. The only time I had any type of trouble with this leaving behind a film was when I put a large note up on the window and left it there for a few days. I am assuming that the heat from the sun hitting on it for the better part of five hours a day made the glue slightly unstable. When I went to remove the paper there was a small amount of film left on the window but nothing that didnt come off with the wipe of a paper towel.
Cost
Ive only seen these sold individually at my local office supply store, Office Depot, where it sells for about $1.49. You can get these for a few cents less online at places like Staples, Shoplet and Office Depot but keep in mind that you, in most cases, will have to factor in the cost of shipping and handling. Is it worth it? For me it is. Its used for more than leaving notes for people or posting up shopping lists; its cut down on the amount of wasted tape and is something thats so easy and simple to use that almost everyone can benefit from having a tube of this around.
The Bottom Line
Overall Im really pleased with my Avery Removable Glue Stick and the way it performs. I like the fact that I can use this for ongoing projects like scrapbooking without having to worry about there being a left over tack or pages getting discolored if I leave photos or pieces of paper adhered for more than a few days. This has really been a great tool for my boys to use on their projects and has given them a little more freedom to play around with designs and artwork that they do from time to time. This is the kind of product that you dont need to have a ton of, just a tube or two will last you a long time and as long as you recap it after you use it, you shouldnt have any trouble with it drying out. On the off chance that you leave the cap off you dont have to throw this out, if the end of it gets hard just take a serrated knife and slice off the part thats turned hard. Thats not something that youll find at the Avery website but something that I learned through trail and error. As always, thanks for the visit
