pink_glitter's Full Review: Avon : Planet Spa African Shea Butter Hand & Cutic...
This was one of the products I got for Christmas from my mam who is an Avon rep. I had mentioned that I liked the Planet Spa range, so got lots of goodies from there, including the African Shea Butter hand and cuticle cream.
I had used a Planet Spa Shea Butter Body Butter from Avon a couple of years ago and loved the smell of it, so was pleased to receive this. I also liked the fact that it's a two in one product designed for hands and cuticles, as previously I was using Burt's Bees lemon butter cuticle cream as well as whatever hand cream I could find - I have about six on the go at once!
The packaging of this product is fairly simple, being a sort of creamy brown coloured tube with plastic flip-top lid. At only 75ml it's a reasonably sized tube, yet small enough to fit into your handbag, or desk drawer.
Now, personally, I always think of Shea Butter as being quite thick, so I was expecting quite a thick hand cream. When I squeezed it out though, I was surprised to find that it was thinner than I had been expecting. Don't get me wrong, it's not watery, but my first experiences with Shea butter products were a couple of very thick body butters, so I think I now always expect anything containing Shea butter to be the same.
The cream is white and rubs in easily. I find less is more with this stuff - the first couple of times I applied it, I now realise I had applied far too much as it left my hands feeling sticky and took quite some time to sink in. Now I apply it carefully, and a bit at a time, and by applying a smaller amount it sinks in much quicker and doesn't leave my skin with that tacky feeling.
By far my favourite thing about this hand cream is the smell. It's absolutely gorgeous. It smells just like Shea butter - if you're not familiar with the scent, I would say it's similar to cocoa butter, but with a sweeter edge, and also a slightly musky hint. It is a lovely scent and it stays on the skin for ages, which is great.
So, does it actually work? Well, I have been applying this to my hands and cuticles sort of regularly - by sort of, I mean most days, but I must admit I have forgotten a few times- and I usually apply it before bed, and sometimes during the day too. I do have dry skin which is prone to eczema, and at the moment with the cold weather, and having the central heating on more often, I find that the skin on my hands is very dry.
I've found that this does moisturise my hands, but the patches where my skin is particularly dry don't appear to benefit much at all. This would lead me to the conclusion that it is probably only suitable for normal skin types, and not great on those of us who have dry skin. As for cuticles, the first few days I applied this there was virtually no difference to my cuticles at all - they looked just as ragged and horrible as if I hadn't applied anything to them at all. I did find, however after around 4 or 5 days of use, they did improve a lot and started to look a lot neater as well as being less dry.
This hand cream will cost you £3.50 for a 75ml tube and can be bought from your local Avon rep or www.avonshop.co.uk.
Overall this was just OK. I love the smell, and it is slightly moisturising, but it's no good for dry skin and it takes a while to have any effect on the cuticles. I will continue to use it as I don't like wasting things, but I wont be buying another tube when it runs out. *Note: Review also posted on Dooyoo under the same username
