bigtruckseries's Full Review: BB Guns- The Ultimate EAA Drozd BB Gun Kit
BUILD QUALITY
The Drozd is made in Russia by IZH Baikhal in a real gun factory. This gun oozes gun level quality – because it is. The polycarbonate parts feel like they will last forever and the addon fake silencer and addon stock feel highly sturdy and just like holding a real gun. Probably moreso. I was shooting a GLOCK 9 the other day at Sunset Hills range and the Drozd feels even more realistic than that.
The gun accepts 6 AA batteries to work the electronic firing mechanism and you also need to load up the 30 shot clip with copper or steel BB’s and a single CO2 powerlet. The gun comes with a nifty, gravity fed speed loader that can load a clip in just a few seconds and a few shakes.
You can buy more clips for $50 each to cut your reload time. In fact, if CO2 powerlets don’t offer you the constant power you want, you can even buy a $50 adapter that allows you to use SCUBA bottles from your paintball gun. Its easy to install and although expensive, will make firing this gun extremely awesome.
I love the high quality of this gun. Everything about it feels like it was planned well. The items each come sealed with signed and stamped Russian paperwork that lets you know that SOMEONE there can be held responsible if everything isn’t up to code. That’s right…too many complaints and someone might find themselves in the gulag !!!
Even though BB Guns that do not fire pellets typically only have smooth bore barrels (so the BB’s won't damage the rifling), this gun has a “rifled barrel !”. This is probably because the gun shop that makes it typically produces rifled barrels but it does concern me slightly as to how well this gun would hold up over 5000 shots.
The only thing that scares me about this gun is the safety. When it is activated and taken off-safe, you get a nice bright red light letting you know you are hot and ready to pop. Problem is, if a kid picked this up and turned it on, he might think this was a toy and rocket off a few BB’s into himself or someone else.
ACCURACY and POWER
The Drozd is no less than a “BB SUBMACHINEGUN”. It is an extraordinarily dangerous weapon and could possibly be used for vandalism, as well as potential eye injury. Hopefully if you do buy one of these you’ll practice proper firearm safety because while the gun can be fun, it can also cause some serious damage seriously fast.
The gun uses 12gram standard powerlets that you can purchase from Walmart or Sports Authority in large numbers on the cheap – especially during sales. Its short 10” barrel length still allows it to propel BB’s at upwards of 500 Feet Per Second. For reference: it takes only 300 FPS to put out an eye or to pierce the skin. In fact, the Drozd is more powerful than some air rifles that you’d have to pump 10 times to reach 500 FPS.
The gun has two firing selectors.
The first firing selector lets you choose between a 1 shot, 3 shot and 6 shot burst. The second selector allows you to select the firing rate: 300, 450 or 600 rounds per minute. The gun’s firing mechanism is completely electronic.
If you want to fire a single shot semi automatically, you simply set the firing selector to 1 shot – regardless what the cyclic rate is. Single shots with this gun are very accurate at 10 Meters due to the rifled barrel, but, the BB’s themselves can throw off accuracy due to minute manufacturing defects.
However, if you really want to tear your target to shreds, you can set the cyclic rate to 600 rounds per minute and the burst selector to 6. The gun will rocket out 6 BB’s in a single pull of the trigger and with consecutive pulls you can empty your 30 rounds in less than 2 seconds.
Each BB carries the kinetic energy required to shatter a glass window of a car – or put out an eye permanently. My only problem with the Drozd is that the safety is electronic and once it is off, this gun is instantly dangerous, moreso than a regular bb pistol would be. Instead of firing just one shot, it can fire 6 with only one trigger pull. That’s a definite danger and one of the reasons sub machine guns SHOULD STAY ILLEGAL to civilians. This gun however is classified as a "BB gun" despite its hidden injury causing potential.
Accuracy is best at low fire rates. High cyclic rates get results all over the target due to your vibrating hand. The stock mitigates this allowing you to hold it more steady, but BB’s are typically never good for accuracy plinking. They are only good for busting glass bottles and cans.
Drozd isn’t good for hunting because of its long distance inaccuracy, but, if you manage to corner a pest, you can “open up” on him and shower him with glass shattering ball bearings that will more than likely kill it by the time the clip is emptied. Trashcan invaders should beware. At distances shorter than 10 feet, this thing will “perforate” an unlucky target.
ACCESSORIES
Drozd’s do not really work well with scopes for accuracy shooting, but, they do work and look great with red dot holosights, or lasers. I got the best results with a Bushnell holosight.
As I mentioned, a Drozd can be purchased with a SCUBA adapter, but there is also a “Blackbird” model sold with a stock that accepts the 88 gram CO2 powerlet. This can be more expensive in the long run than just using the SCUBA tank but because of the SCUBA’s higher cost to purchase, and the fact you’d either have to get a hand pump or a very expensive machine pump to refill it, a Drozd can be very expensive – upwards of $500 to buy and use.
OVERALL
This gun is awesome but it is definitely not a toy and shouldn’t even be used to teach youth gun safety. Its DANGEROUS and I can’t emphasize that enough. Still, for backyard plinking, bottle busting or tin can perforation its really hard to find a better performer. Thank you Russia !
