Pros: Highway and interstate driving, Range, Signal strength indicator, No speeding tickets!
Cons: Mounting bracket, location of speaker, city driving
The Bottom Line: I would definitely recommend the vector 985 to anyone looking out for speed traps and who also have a little patience with the few annoyances and few false alarms.

| introsleep's Full Review: Beltronics Vector 985 Radar Detector |
Before I say anything, I want to point out that i really dont know much about radar detectors but i do have the beltronics vector 985 and i thought that i would put a good word in for it.
I live in Colorado, on the front range which is almost completely urban so I have noticed a few false alarms but I have found that false alarms only register under 5 (out of 9) on the signal strength indicator and usually happen around large buildings or expensive houses with security systems. But a real police radar will start kind of low and build up to 8 or 9 as you apporach the car. So if you glance over at the signal strength you can pretty much figure out for your self if its a cop or not.
I recently drove out to Chicago from Colorado and soon realized that I could have alot of confidence in the 985 on the interstate since the few speed traps that i did come across were no match for the 985. At one time i think i had over a full mile from when it started to go off and when i actually drove by the cop at a perfectly legal speed. So thanks to the 985 i cut atleast a few hours off of that trip and it probably saved me some of my sanity since I cant just cruise at the speed limit for an entire day.
The only complaints I have with the 985 is the mounting bracket and the speaker location. It is very hard to find a perfectly level position while mounting it on a windshield, and also the suction cups have stoppoed working after only a few months. So now I have started clipping it onto my sun visor which works pretty good except for the cord going down the middle of my windshield and having no use of my visor when I need it. Also, the speaker is on the right side of the unit which means that when you are driving and the alarm goes off it blares right at your passenger insted of you. If it was on the left hand side you wouldn't have to have it on so loud and it would be alot easier on passengers. Also, I lost the instructions and have no idea how to customize the settings so every time I turn it on it has to go through this test thing where it makes all kinds of annoying sounds. So if you do buy the 985 which I do recomend, make sure to read about that so you dont have to listen to that all the time.
Over all, this is defiently a good working radar detector and has defiently saved me from a few speeding tickets and has allowed me to get from point a to point b alittle faster. If time really is money this will defiently pay off. Just be smart about the alarms when they go off and learn the area and where cops usually are before you barrel down 30 miles an hour over the speed limit.
