The Z4+ From Bic: Smooth Writing, Inexpensive & Super Comfortable

Written: Dec 09 '07
Pros:Nice comfort grip, rich ink, nice looking pen.
Cons:Not that much of a difference from the standard Z4
The Bottom Line: Not a bad way to spend .80 cents!

I need more pens like I need another hole in my head but when I saw the two pack of the Z4+ pens I couldn't help myself. Not only were they an updated version of a pen that I really liked writing with but it was in a .7mm tip and black ink. OK, I'll be honest, I am a compulsive shopper, anything with a sale sign attracts me like a moth to a flame. You would be hard pressed to find an average pen for .80 cents let alone a twin pack of pens like this. The Bic name is one that is known worldwide and they are constantly adding new products to their catalog as well as revamping older ones to stay at the top of their game.

Bic Z4+Fie .7mm Roller Ball Pen

One of the biggest changes to this pen from the older but still impressive Z4 design is the comfort grip. This is slightly thicker than the Z4 and has a textured design to it. Sure, chances are it is only there for looks but when you are writing with it, it does give your fingers a little bit of extra protection against cramps and soreness. The downside is that the comfort grip is a little smaller in size; thicker yes but smaller. If you have ailments or arthritis and have trouble gripping regular stick pens, the Z4+ might be worth looking in to because of the comfort grip.

Most of the pens that I use on a regular basis are black ink; if I have to photocopy something at a later date I need to make sure that the ink will be dark enough that the copier will be able to read it. With red and blue ink, that can be a huge problem. The ink in this is the same as the Z4 so if you have used them you will know what to expect from it. It dries fast and has a dark hue to it but this is not a fine line pen; even though Bic classifies it as 'fine' it is a .7mm tip so the lines are a little on the thick side.

To get the smoothest write with this, use it on loose leaf, copy paper or a tablet. On a single sheet the line is a little thinner but there is no skipping. This doesn't work well on slick papers but that isn't the fault of the pen; to write on photographs or slick paper you need something that has a truly permanent ink and will dry almost instantly. While the ink in this pen does dry quickly and is permanent the tip is what prevents it from working well on slick paper. Unless you press extremely hard and carve out a groove with it so the ink will stay in the recessed area, it will smudge and smear off.

I'm not all that crazy about the cap; it's small and you really have to be careful that you have it clipped securely on the pen. It does make a clicking sound when properly pressed into place but I can see how people could accidentally not recap it properly and end up with a mess in their backpack pr briefcase. The ink is permanent so if you get it on skin or clothing try to wash it off or out as soon as possible. The clip on the cap is nice but I never make use of them. If black isn't your color you can also get these in red and blue; likewise they are also made in a .5mm size.

The Bottom Line

The Z4+ is a nice pen to write with; for .80 cents I couldn't pass it up. The twin packs usually sell for about $1.59 to $2.00 depending on where you shop but so far I have only been able to find them online. As with all pens and products from Bic, if you aren’t happy or satisfied with it they will replace it at no cost to you. The address is on the back of the package if you do need to contact them or you can use the handy dandy form at the official website located at www.bicworld.com. If you are shopping for stocking stuffers, these will make any pen junkie grin from ear to ear!

As always, thanks for the visit…
