The primary use for my computer is not musical entertainment. I have several sound systems for that - CD, Radio, cassette, and a turntable (generation just revealed).
That being said, one cannot fully enjoy the internet experience without a set of speakers. There is great music on the net, video/audio clips, voice chat, and those ever popular musical greeting cards from places like Hallmark.com and bluemountain.com!
So, my thinking was- I need a pair of speakers that will give me decent sound for not a lot of money. I made my trip to Best Buy and perused the speaker aisle. They displayed 2 dozen models ranging in price from 9.95 to more than a hundred dollars!
There sat the Labtec 50 - on sale for 14.95. They had a pair hooked up and I liked the clear sound. How could I go wrong for 14.95? I snatched them up, told the checkout clerk I did NOT need the extended warranty (Best Buy always asks), and took them home.
Installation was a breeze. Take out of plastic, plug in power cord, plug into speaker port on back of PC, press button- voila!
I went to Realplayer radio to try them out. I tuned in my favorite jazz station and was pleasantly surprised. A very nice sound. Clear, good mix, full. My only regret was that there was no way to add a tad more bass - I like that.I popped in a CD and the same clear sound came forth.
I wanted to listen from the next room so I turned it up. It was ok, but the speakers have a limited volume. I could hear it, but not at the level I would have liked. But, for 14.95 it was fine.
The speakers are about 7 inches tall and about 4 inches wide - so they are not small- but they fit well on my computer desk.
I recommend them as a good first speaker purchase.
