My old Labtec "cheapo" speakers weren't cutting for me anymore so I trekked on over to Best Buy and checked out what they had that might have that would be a step up.
Now, I wasn't going for "surround sound" quality. I just wanted something inexpensive that would allow me to enjoy some music while surfing the web, and would be decent enough to hear the cutesy e-cards you get once in a while.
The Labtec Spin 50 speakers caught my eye at less than $15.00.
Features
These speakers are relatively small - about the size of an eggplant (o my - can you tell I'm writing this just before dinner?!).
There's a "bass port" - a mini-woofer? Now, it won't rattle any windows but it's decent. I listened to some Gregorian Chants on them and it was a rich sound. I was surprised at how good the sound was for an expensive and small unit.
A headphone jack right in front is nice when you don't want to disturb others near you. Any standard headphone jack will work ( the small type).
The bottom of each speaker is indented with moldings to wind the cords around - nice to get rid of "cable clutter". The two speakers are wired together already - no plug-ins to come disconnected.
For you techies - the frequency response is 80Hz - 18kHz and the power output is 2 watts RMS.
There's a push button on/off switch with an indicator light. Volume control is good, but you won't be blasting the walls out. When I am at the computer and right in front of the speakers, I never need to turn it up a great deal....if I want to listen from another room I find the sound dissipates some. So, it's fine for in-room listening.
The speakers are very light weight but sit soundly on an even surface. They only come in white and fabric covering over the speakers is gray.
Installation
Nothing to it - take them out of the box and plug into your speaker connection on the back of your PC.
Cables are thin but relatively long so you have good ability to place them in a variety of positions.
A power adaptor comes with it.
My Experience
I've used these speakers for about a year now and I am well pleased. They have served my needs well. I could upgrade to more expensive speakers, and if I did serious music listening or used my computer as a primary source of music I might consider that. But,these are serving me well.
The one year warranty is probably irrelevant. They are so inexpensive and well made it doesn't matter, and probably the store you purchase them from would take care of any return that might be necessary.
The price has come down since I bought mine, which makes them an even better deal! If you want decent quality at a low price, this model is for you.
