| essz's Full Review: Babolat Pure Drive Team Tennis Racquet |
After watching Andy Roddick hit 149 mph with this racquet, it was definitely one I had to run out and test out to see if it really did live up to all the hype I had heard. So I meandered down to my local tennis shop and got the demo racquet. As a word of advice, if you can, ask them to re-string the racquet for you and explain that it's so you can "truly test the racquet because you are interested in buying it" because a lot of the time, the stringing job on the racquet is so terrible it becomes a waste of your time trying out the racquet.
The first time I played with the racquet, I was surprised by its lack of control and huge power. I could launch shots that I could never have before, but they were flying all over the place. Seeing as how I normally play a power game, this would normally be helpful except for the absolute lack of control I had. Coming to the net was out of the question - I was hitting volleys into the ground more than I was hitting winners.
The bulkiness of the racquet was strange to me. It definitely didn't feel as sleek as other racquets (think Head LiquidMetal, Prince More Dominant etc.) and it seemed slightly clumsy in my hands. However, once I passed the racquet over to my friend, he loved the power it added to his game. His serve was approaching Roddick levels with the Babolat! But seriously, even he complained about the lack of control he felt.
So ultimately, if you are someone who wants to pack on some power on to your game, and already have a very fine control game, test this racquet out. But if you're not willing to sacrifice control, then take a pass on this much hyped offering.
