| natemes's Full Review: Baby Bjorn Baby Sitter 123 Activity Bouncer |
It's 3:57 in the morning and my three-week-old baby is asleep.
He's still got night and day messed up and wakes up every 2 hours to feed, but right now he's quiet and in his Baby Bjorn 123 bouncer---and I'm happily on the internet.
The bounce is gentle--the baby's motion generates a fair amount and it's easy to keep moving with a parent's foot. Comapred to our two other bouncers, the Bjorn seems to stay in motion longer--maybe due to the long seat and simple constuction.
Some believe the baby's own motion is best as it creates a sort of self-soothing without creating constant motion that the baby might get so used to so much that he or she would have trouble sleeping without always moving--a risk perhaps with mechanical bouncers and swings. With the Bjorn, the baby provides most of the motion and then as the baby settles so does the Bjorn. As I sit here, my little one is moving a little and the seat moves with him providing just a little soothing.
I read reviews of the Bjorn bouncer on-line but was pretty sceptical, mostly due to the cost. We own two other bouncers, both mainstream battery-powered, vibrating bouncers. They're fine and he does like the vibration, but they are plastic and nylon contraptions. Effective enough but somewhat cheesy-looking.
The Bjorn is elegant in it's simplicity, design, and function. The base is mostly made of heavy metal tubing, the front portion of the base is wood, the seat is a simple canvas. No batteries, no tinny music.
The seat is adjustable for three different degrees of incline ranging from fairly flat to fairly upright. The seat can also be folded flat for easy transport. It is very light and can easily be carried from room to room even with a baby in the other arm.
The seat works for babies up to ~25 lbs giving a longer functional life than some less well-made bouncers. The fabric is easily removed and washable. The restraint secures more easily than anything else I've seen--very easy to operate.
The toy bar, with it's colorful bears and balls is nicely made out of wood--again simple, not at all garish. Our little one is a bit young to pay much attention to it yet, but he did stare at a bit today.
Overall, my wife and I are very pleased with the Bjorn babysitter 123. I'm not sure we would have bought it full price to be honest--we like it, but it would really have been out of our price range. We found one locally on Craig's List for $15 and the seller took $10 for it. A price that's pretty hard to beat. I suggest looking for used one's on Ebay or Craig's List. The Bjorn is so well constructed with so little to go wrong, I think it could move from baby to baby very easily.
