djningr's Full Review: Babybjörn Original Baby Carrier
Intro:
My husband and I bought this carrier for our son within the first month that he was born (June 06'). We decided we needed to have a carrier that would enable us to be hands free but still be able to carry our son and keep us close to him. We tried out several models at Babies R Us, but found that this was the best. We are so satisfied that we still use the carrier today (even now that he is 12 months old).
Design:
The carrier is set up so that there are two straps that cross in an X in the middle of your back. In the front you bring around the strap and click in the bottom so that there is two feet holes for your baby to slide his legs into. After your baby is in place you slide the sides in their slots (in the Sliding Buckle Clip) on both sides of the baby and then make sure their arms are in the slots and you click the top of the carrier over their shoulders. This four point area keeps them secure. The carrier can be adjusted for height between 21" and 35.5" and weigh between 8-25 lbs. When the baby is between 8-11 lbs there are leg straps that must be used. The baby is meant to face toward the adult until baby can keep their head upright.
Our experience:
We were fortunate that our baby loved this carrier at the beginning and even now at 12 months old. Last summer when traveling we found this to be very convenient and we could hold him for much longer this way because our arms would give out. Our backs didn't hurt with this carrier either. Our son also LOVED being close to us (he is a snuggler!) and this helped him to remain close to us even when our arms were tired, or just needed to get some things done. I was able to do laundry, dishes, and other household things with him strapped to me. The only thing that we found was hard with the carrier wasn't the carrier's fault. For awhile our son used to spit up ALL OF THE TIME. Well, it was really hard to get him in the carrier during this time because every time he did he would spit up (LOTS!) all over us and the carrier. But I found that the carrier was easy to clean by hand and by washer (Machine wash in warm water, mild detergent, gentle cycle, and drip dry).
Two other positives:
I never tried it but the carrier advertises that you can also nurse with your baby in the carrier. It is suggested that you slide one strap off your shoulders and support your baby and the carrier at all times. Thinking back on it (I nursed my baby til he was one year old) I suppose it would have been easy enough to do, I just never thought of it at the time.
The other positive is that the owner's manual is easy to understand and gives clear directions.
The negatives of the carrier:
I am happy to report that there are none. We absolutely love this carrier.
Overall:
The carrier is well worth every penny. It is great and I would recommend it highly to all.
