raqueldylan's Full Review: Babybjörn Original Baby Carrier
I have a son, born in 1997, and a daughter, born in 2002. I bought the Baby Bjorn for both children. I loved it the first time, love it the second time.
I used it with my older son until he was about 18 months old. I used it at the grocery store because I refused to put him in the grocery cart (yuck!) I always felt comfortable both in the shoulder and back area, where the weight of the baby applies the most pressure. My son never seemed uncomfortable at all. He loved being able to see outward.
I am 5'0" and 106 lbs, my husband 5'11", we both use it easily thanks to the adjustable straps. I know it saved me from plenty of backaches since my son weighed 17 lbs by the time he was 3 months old (I can hardly believe he was only 7 lbs at birth.) When he went through a period where he won't nap unless he was on my chest, the Baby Bjorn was my only solution. I was able to eat! With my new baby girl, I have to use it while I make dinner. She just wants to be held all the time. I am lucky if the megasaucer in the kitchen works for her, but most of the time it's the Baby Bjorn.
After three practice runs, the straps became second nature to me. I found the straps less confusing if I always keep the left side completely attached and attach one of the components on the right side, which is what the manufacturer suggests anyway. I never had any trouble putting my babies in it. Once on our way home from Kindergarten, I had to switch my daughter from rear facing to front facing (she woke up from her nap.) I did it with no problems. I've even fed her with a bottle in the rear facing position. Just like everything else, practice makes perfect.
I purchased a 2002 model for my daughter because of some improvements the company made. The newer models have a button and loop attachment at the leg holes to close the gap for small newborns. The head support and side latch snaps were replaced by a head support knob and a side latch groove, which makes for a quieter unloading of a sleeping baby, an important factor for a light sleeper (which baby #2 happened to be, hence the new purchase.)
The Baby Bjorn is so durable! I gave my older one to an expecting friend (with the leg opening correction, of course.) I only hope that her baby is a heavier sleeper than my daughter, so the snaps don't wake her baby. It is easy to wash in the washer. Because it needs to line dried, plan on washing it when you're not going to need it soon.
As for the leg opening correction, the company will provide it for older models upon request. I believe it took 4 weeks to arrive. If I am mistaken, you can always consult babybjorn.com.
I am glad the Baby Bjorn exists! We use it often, especially when strollers are impractical due to space limitation. I have purchased baby backpacks when my son was a year old, but they don't work well for small adults like me (I have a short torso), so I just returned them. I highly recommend this product.
