With my recent transition to the world of cloth diapers, I have been collecting many different kinds of fitted diapers. Fitted diapers are those that have fasteners instead of the old pinning method with boring white diapers.
I’ve been amazed at the variety of diapers available. The majority of those I have acquired are sewn by WAHMs (work-at-home moms). One of these stands out above the rest, and it is the Elkebella.
This particular WAHM uses whatever materials are available to her at the time, but the basic diaper uses flannel layers and towel layers in the soaker pad for absorbency. The diapers are generally turned and topstitched to give a smooth, finished look with no raw edges touching baby.
The prices range from $8.50 to $10.50, depending on size. When some other materials are used, such as hemp, the price is somewhat higher.
What is this diaper like?
This diaper is made out of a gorgeous floral flannel. There is a cream-colored background with roses. It is the only diaper in my collection that I call beautiful instead of just cute. Please look at some pictures on the seller’s website. The picture shown here on Epinions appears to be just a fleece cover, not a diaper.
The diaper has a snap closure. The tabs have two snaps on them, and across the front part of the diaper are four snap sockets on each side, so there are a variety of placement options to get the right fit.
The Elkebella diaper has elastic across the front panel and around the leg openings. The fit is just right on my daughter.
An interesting feature is that part of the soaker pad is inside the diaper, and the other side is attached inside the back waistline as a fold out soaker, so you can have all those layers of protection but aren’t stuck with a diaper that takes forever to dry because of too many layers buried inside the diaper. This way, half is in and half is out. This attached soaker can be folded up to accommodate the area where your baby wets most. The Elkebella name and size of this diaper are embroidered onto the soaker.
Why do I like this diaper so well?
The first time we tried this diaper, my daughter ended up falling asleep and she took a long nap. I changed it when she woke up and was amazed at the absorbency. Being able to fold that soaker pad up and place it in the correct spot gives extra protection. I have never had this diaper end up soaking wet, just damp feeling.
The fit on my daughter is perfect. Besides the gentle elastic helping it stay snug, I think a lot has to do with the cut of the diaper. It seems to be cut so there is less at the top of the thigh. It isn’t so low down on the high and binding like some others I have tried. It is easy to just pull over to the correct snap placement. It isn’t a struggle to adjust the fit.
The snaps on the tummy panel have the backside enclosed, so there is only fabric touching baby’s skin.
The great look of the diaper makes it one I reach for often, as well.
What can I complain about with this product?
There is only one complaint, and that is the fact that the diapers are very hard to come by! She currently is selling only by announcement list or auction. I was lucky enough to find a new one she had for sale by auction and was the high bidder. Of course, this means you generally end up paying a higher price for one because you are competing with others. Mine was somewhere around $14.00 before shipping due to bidding competition. You can sign up for her announcement list to be notified when products are available. Her website also gives a link to her auction items.
Knowing that I can sell it when my daughter outgrows it makes it easier to pay a higher price at auction.
Recommendation
If you have a chance to get your hands on an Elkebella diaper, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. With the super absorbency and wonderful fit, we have been very pleased.
