| bigjon's Full Review: Baby Trend Diaper Champ 4000 |
So we go shopping for a new diaper pail. The current one we have is just a regular trash can. Trying to combat the rotten smell of poop...I made the mistake of putting one of those car air fresheners in the bottom of the can. Now everytime I open the can, it smells like someone pooped a whole pineapple...BLECH.
If you read the reviews for the world famous "Diaper Genie" you notice that everyone has such a great time with it. "No poop smells!" "Easy to use!"....but my only concern is the refills. Ok, call me cheap, but I don't want to spend hundreds a year just to throw my child's diapers away!
That's when we came across Baby Trend's Diaper Champ. The first thing that caught my eye was right on the box: "Use any plastic bag - No special cartridges" Ok, now that's cool. We already buy trash bags from the wholesale club. So I wanted to know how it matched up with the rest of pails.
First thing I do is read the reviews on Epinions.com, of course. Overall rating...4 out of 5. Not bad. So I start reading the reviews, "No more poop smell!" "Winner and still champ!" "Better than the genie!" And I think...DING...we're onto something here! So my mother purchases the Diaper Champ for us.
First thing I like, it stands up tall like a normal kitchen trash can. That means more diapers. Secondly, it uses any kind of bag. Right now I am actually using those cheapie trash bags you buy at the dollar store with the four little flaps at the top (they actually fit into the Champ better than a bag with a drawstring). Next, the unique way the diaper is disposed. You put the diaper in the hole at the top, you flip the handle from one side to the other. TADA!...as the head flips over, a heavy piston pushes the diaper down the hole into the bag. Now it's ready for the next diaper. Wide plastic base keeps the unit from falling over. Bag removal and replacement....30 seconds....if even that.
Now, how easy is it to use? I know, you can't really tell by the way I describe it above. How about this....I HAVE MY 2 YEAR OLD TRAINED ON HOW TO USE IT. Not that hard.
Now to break the myths. I've read tons of reviews praising this device. I've also found a couple bashing it completely. Let's take a look at what they say:
"Despite the box, it DOES NOT KEEP POOP SMELL IN!"
Umm...you aren't, by any chance, sticking your nose in the hole as the head turns are you? Granted...the machine does create a small puff of air as the piston moves...but unless you are feeding your child fried fish...it does not smell that bad. The only thing I can figure is that these people aren't emptying the trash can as often as they can...
"The hole is too small...the diapers don't fit in. The diaper gets stuck, the piston won't push it down."
Ok folks. Are you making your 12 year old wear diapers? That's a good 3-4 inch opening! Unless you are stuffing the diaper in still opened...I've been able to wrap my child's diapers so they fit perfectly fine. AND I'M A MAN. So, maybe it's a little big...you might have given your child too much to drink last night. I'll give you that. You shove the diaper in the hole...it barely fits. The piston weighs a good 5-10 POUNDS...what in God's name are you feeding your child that a diaper cannot be pushed through a hole by a 10 pound weight?
"When it does get stuck, the manual says to push the piston down by hand....ewwww!"
If you wrap your diaper like everyone else in the world....the outer part of the diaper is on the outside, and the poop is on the inside. If you are doing it right, nothing should be touching the insides of the hole other than the outside of the diaper! Keep in mind, the outside of their diaper touches...your clothes, your hand, rubs all over the carpet. Are you guys wrapping your diapers inside out or something!?!?
Overall, I haven't found anything wrong with this product. It sells for a great price, saves you money on expensive refills, and if you USE IT PROPERLY...it doesn't smell.
I hope this review helped you greatly.
UPDATE 2/25/05
We liked the Diaper Champ so much...we bought a second one for upstairs. Still works great!
