| FlanderFlop's Full Review: Baby Trend Diaper Champ 4000 |
When the having a baby thing was still new and overwhelming, someone told us that we absolutely must have a Diaper Genie which seems to be the brand name of diaper pails that everyone knows. Fortunately for us, the actual picking out of the diaper pail fell on my sister-in-laws plate, so we were just pleasantly surprised when a Diaper Champ showed up instead.
The Diaper Champ is basically just a normal trash can with a special lid. The lid has a handle that rotates 180 degrees causing a plunger to move back and forth in a hole in the lid. When you place a dirty diaper in the hole, it sits on top of the plunger, but when you rotate the handle 180 degrees, the plunger ends up on top and slides down pushing the diaper into the bag inside the can.
The primary advantage of the Diaper Champ over other brands is that you can use whatever bag you want rather than specific bags designed for the pail. We actually use old plastic grocery bags just because we have so many lying around. The pale is designed so that even though grocery bags are too small for the Champ, they can hang by their handles and end up working quite well. Because we use smaller bags we have to empty the Champ more often than you would otherwise, but this helps minimize the smell that might otherwise escape. This is probably why some other people have complained that the Champ is not as smell proof as it claims, and we have not had any problem in that regard.
So lets look at how it works
Ease of Use
The Diaper Champ is incredibly easy to use, and you can dispose of the diaper with one hand while having the other free to make sure the baby stays where he is supposed to. The only problem is that you need to make sure you dont leave the sticky straps on the diapers hanging free as they have a tendency to get caught in the rotating mechanism of the lid and cause it to jam. It is easy to tell when the Champ is getting full because the diapers dont drop out of the hole in the lid and it is harder to turn the lid back for the next diaper. When this happens, you can shake it a little, and the next diaper will fall, but you know you have to change the bag quickly.
Smell
As I said earlier we use smaller bags than most, so we have not had much problem with smell due to a lower diaper volume. It should also be noted that we use about 50/50 cloth and disposable diapers, so our Champ doesnt fill as quickly as others would.
use with cloth
Although we do not use our Diaper Champ for our cloth diapers, our experience with it would indicate that it would not be ideal for use with cloth diapers. Cloth diapers in this case would not only tend to keep the Champ a little dirtier, but would also tend to get caught in the lid as you rotate it. On the other hand, the nice sealed lid would eliminate the drowning hazard created by having an open bucket in the room.
overall
Because you dont have to buy special bags, the Diper Champ is cheaper to use than many other brands. It is simple to use, and we have had good luck with it. It contains the smell reasonably well, and if I had to do it over again, I would get the same pail again.
