| ahsitan's Full Review: Baby Trend Diaper Champ 4000 |
The Baby Trend Diaper Champ 4000 is the best diaper pail system that I have encountered for disposable diapers. When our first son was born we owned two diaper pails: the Diaper Genie and The Baby Trend Diaper Champ. We had used the Diaper Genie on those occasions that we had our son in disposable diapers. The Diaper Champ is a fully enclosed system that you can operate using one hand. We wanted an enclosed system to use with the cloth diapers so that the pail would not introduce a hygiene risk for our child when he started getting around on his own. The Diaper Champ is comprised of the pail base and a flip handle shoot where you insert the diapers. The pail measures approximately 8" x 17" x 26".
Using the Diaper Champ
When inserting the diaper, you place it in the shoot and then take the handle and flip it over to the other side. The lid is weighted and forces the diaper to drop through the shoot into the bottom of the pail. The design allows for frugal saving in the diaper hygiene area. There are no special bags to purchase; you can use plastic bags from grocery shopping, tall kitchen bags, or a waterproof reusable liner. I am not sure how many disposable diapers it holds, but it does hold a lot more than the Diaper Genie (enough to fill a medium sized kitchen trash can). Our little one goes through up to 20 diapers a day and we generally only change the bags once every three days. With the diaper genie, we had to change the liner every one to two days.
The cloth diapers and the cloth wipes tended to get caught often, and their bulk quickly filled the pail. Also, the soiled cloth diapers quickly soiled the shoot. It basically served its purpose, but I was not entirely happy with it as a cloth diaper disposal system.
This pails design also seals off the hole so most odors cannot escape. The pail seems to control odors much better than the Diaper Genie. We only place diapers that have been peed on in the pail. The soiled diapers, we place in a plastic bag or two, tie it off and throw it in the kitchen garbage (emptied more often). This cuts down on the odors.
It is relatively easy for an adult to change the bag. There is a lever on the one side of the pail that you pull towards you to release the lid. Inside you need to lift the blue plastic lid (has a handle) with a hole that matches up to the shoot (that lifts easily). And then remove the bag of diapers. This does not keep curious toddlers from playing with the flip handle, but it does keep them out of the dirty diapers.
Cleaning the Diaper Champ
If your bag lined the interior of the pail, you will only need to clean the shoot, the outside, and the blue lid inside. I usually just wipe it down with Lysol cleaner.
Cons of Using This Diaper Disposal System
There are a few cons to using the Diaper Champ.
1. My older son thinks it is a toy and wants to play with flipping the handle back and forth.
2. Sometimes the wipes will get caught in the shoot if you send single wipes through.
3. The cloth diapers and the cloth wipes tended to get caught often, and their bulk quickly filled the pail.
4. The soiled cloth diapers quickly soiled the shoot.
5. You dont realize it is full until you cannot jam a diaper down the shoot.
My Opinion
I would recommend this diaper pail for disposable diaper disposal. It contains both the odors and the diapers very well. As a cloth diaper receptacle, it basically served its purpose, but I was not entirely happy with it. I would ask that the design might be changed so that the cloth diapers would not continue to get stuck in the shoot.
