Malt beverages are normally associated with beer and beer only, since all beer products use malted barley as the base ingredient with possibly other grains for variations in flavor. But in the past five to ten years, a new type of beverage has emerged that uses a malt base but tastes nothing like beer. These malt beverages were born out of the old wine cooler products that were popular in the 1980s and they continue to win over some loyal adherents. I have sampled a few and found most to be agreeable, even if not as good as a glass of beer. One example of this type of drink is Bacardi Silver Mojito, a refreshing malt- based beverage from Anheuser- Busch.

Basic Facts About This Beverage:
Bacardi Silver Mojito is cloudy/white in color with a bubbly body that loses its head of foam in seconds, making it look similar to a fountain Fresca soft drink. The aroma of this product is soft and sweet, with scents of spearmint and fruit making their way to the surface.
Bacardi Silver Mojito offers a taste that combines spearmint, lime, and various citrus that reminds me of a touch of grapefruit combined with lemon. The taste is quite sweet and very cloying, with little or no alcohol presence. The alcohol level of Bacardi Silver Mojito is five percent by volume, but the sweetness masks the taste of the alcohol.
Bacardi Silver Mojito is yet another entry in the long line of malt- based or flavored beer products that have captured the fancy of those who want something fruity and refreshing as an alternative to drinking beer. Often referred to as malternative or alcopops, these malt- based, fruit- enhanced beverages are really nothing like beer at all, except for the malt base. They are also (with a few exceptions) exceptionally sweet and the sugar content successfully hides the taste of alcohol, which is roughly equal to the alcohol level in most beer.
Bacardi Silver Mojito is supposed to be based on the flavor of an actual mojito, which is a rum drink made with mint and lime. Bacardi Silver Mojito certainly gets the mint and lime flavors correct, but unfortunately, there is no essence of rum to be found in this product. Added rum flavor would have made Bacardi Silver Mojito seem more like an authentic mojito mixed drink, but Anheuser- Busch decided instead to produce a sweet beverage that tastes like spearmint, citrus fruit, and little else. I have heard some people compare the taste of Bacardi Silver Mojito to spearmint gum and even though I dont chew gum very often, I can understand exactly what they are talking about. The spearmint flavor and the sweetness do, indeed, seem very similar to a sugary piece of spearmint chewing gum.
Speaking of the sweetness, this is one area where Bacardi Silver Mojito takes its taste a little too far. I love a nice, sweet drink every now and then, but Bacardi Silver Mojito is quite cloying, to the point that some people will find it too thick and sweet to enjoy the way they should. Because of its sweetness, it leaves a slight coating on the palate that takes time to eliminate. Some will not mind this quality at all, but others will consider this a definite turn- off.
Bacardi Silver Mojito is the type of drink that most people will find at least acceptable and those who love sweet alcoholic drinks will find it very tasty. The combination of sugar, fruit, and mint is sure to please those who like sweet mixed drinks. And the added carbonation helps add a degree of refreshment to this drink, making it a good choice for a summer beverage.
Overall, Bacardi Silver Mojito is a difficult beverage to rate. I like a good mojito, but this beverage offers very little authentic mojito taste due to the absence of rum in the flavor. Judging for what it is, Bacardi Silver Mojito seems just as good as most other malternative/alcopop beverages and for that reason, I am going to give Bacardi Silver Mojito a slight recommendation. It is no substitute for a glass of great beer or a rum- based mojito, but it does offer the refreshing combination of mint and citrus with an actively bubbling body, making it a good beverage choice for a hot summer day.
