Pros: Wide rim, open cup mouthpiece creates good open sound.
Cons: Limited range on lower end.
The Bottom Line: I achieved a nice open toned upper range using my Bach mouthpiece without overusing my ambiture. Mouthpieces are a very personal issue. This is a great one to try.

| sofarsogood's Full Review: Bach - 10 - 10 S |
While I don't actively play a horn anymore, I spent 7 years on a Bach 10 about 3 or 4 hours each day. I stumbled onto the Bach mouthpiece on accident through loaner horns at my high school. When I ended up with a different horn, I had to buy one to hang onto.
The shape of the Bach mouthpiece is the cause of my preference. The outer rim is round and wide. I could get very high range with good accuracy using the Bach. When I played on the Holton mouthpiece out of my case, I found the upper range sounded pinched and tight and my accuracy was shoddy. Admittedly, my lower range on the Bach seemed limited. When I got my ambiture loose enough, I had trouble keeping the mouthpiece centered. The Holton held easier on a loose ambiture. Beyond the accuracy and comfort, my biggest asset using the Bach was fatigue. I found that I experience less fatigue over long playing stints using the Bach than other mouthpieces.
The inner cup is more open than a number of other mouthpieces that I tried, I like to think that the shape makes the sound more open. Obviously, this is an epinion--not an assessment of mouthpiece design. The Holton definitely produced a different type of sound consistently though. I much prefer the open hollow tone that I was able to achieve using the Bach.
Beyond the design, it is just a mouthpiece. I found it is easy to keep the corrosion down scrubbing it out with toothpaste and my brush about once a month or a week if it looked yucky. I didn't have any redrot problems over the 7 year period that I used the mouthpiece extensively. I did keep it in a black rubber case that had airholes after I dented the base pretty bad at a concert.
Happy horning.
