Pros: all-natural, easily found in vitamin and natural foods stores, very effective
I had heard about Rescue Remedy for many months from fellow animal rescuers. It was said to work wonders for animals with anxiety and aggression problems. When my baby boy, a 3 year old cat that I had raised from 4 weeks and a formula bottle, developed anxiety and aggression issues, I was determined to find it. A 20 pound submissive male, neutered cat came into our home as a foster and my also-neutered male was having no part of it. He did everything in his power 24/7 to attack the foster boy. He also was peeing all over my house and was in perfect health. Feliway plug-ins didn't work. Calm Down (a Rescue Remedy rip-off of sorts) did nothing. He wouldn't drink water or eat food that had chamomile tea mixed into it. I even tried giving him prescription HUMAN anti-anxiety meds (as prescribed by his vet) but he wanted no part of taking those pills. He even learned to throw them back up! Rescue Remedy seemed to be my last resort. So why couldn't I find it at PetCo or PetSmart?
I was telling a coworker about my situation and desperation. I said "I've even tried Rescue Remedy!" She said "really, how did it work? What was the dosage?" I was like "slow down! It wasn't exactly Rescue Remedy." I told her that I tried a similar product with no results and could not find Rescue Remedy in pet stores. She said "it's for humans and you can get it in the mall at GNC." DUH! Why didn't I think of that? She also said she wanted to try it on her cats but was concerned about the dosage as the directions prescribe 4 drops for humans and she said that such a dose "knocked her out".
I didn't believe that 4 drops could cause sleep like she described and I was willing to try anything to calm down my boy. Would it work on him? What about me?
From the website: Rescue Remedy has been used successfully on stressful days where we suffer from impatience, tension and pressure. It has also been used successfully with children to stop a tantrum, before a speech or job interview. Rescue Remedy helps us relax, get focused and get the needed calmness. Many people chose to carry Rescue Remedy in their purse, at the office, in the car or in the diaper bag. You never know when you need it. Pregnant women in labor have made the experience easier and less traumatic by taking Rescue Remedy. Rescue Remedy can also be taken just before going to bed to calm a troubled mind.
Star of Bethlehem: For trauma and shock.
Clematis: For the tendency to "pass out", and unconsciousness, being far away and not present mentally.
Cherry Plum: Fear of mind giving way, verge of breakdown, anger.
Impatiens: For irritability, tension and fidgety.
Rock Rose: For frozen terror and panic.
From the bottle: Take 4 drops in a small glass of water. Repeat as necessary. Can also be taken by placing 4 drops directly on or under tongue.
I dosed my man with Rescue Remedy as soon as I got home with it. They prescribe 4 drops for humans and we wanted to know about the dosage for cats. I didn't have the tools to dilute Rescue Remedy into water and then give it to him so I just gave him a 3/4 full dropper of it. His attitude improved within 10 minutes and he was purring and rubbing up against me in a way I haven't seen since the foster cat came here.
Okay, if I was willing to try it out on my baby boy, I wanted to try it out on myself. I placed 4 drops into a small amount of water and swigged it as the taste wasn't very pleasant. Within minutes I felt as if I had popped a Xanax or done a few shots without the silliness. I must have fallen asleep within 15 minutes. I slept for about an hour and couldn't believe that I had validated my co-workers "knocked me out" claim. Furthermore, I couldn't believe that 4 drops knocked me out and did nothing to my cat! Wow!
I dosed him again at bedtime and he slept soundly through the night without his usual growling anxiety when we flip or move during the night. It really seems to make a positive difference in his behavior.
I have to say that this is a great product. It was great stress relief the first time I sampled it and every time thereafter. It will help you if you can't fall asleep at night and it will help you if you feel anxious throughout the day. I have encountered many different anti-anxiety meds for panic attacks, anxiety, and such but Rescue Remedy ranks right up there with THE most effective.
