The Epinions listing for this reads, "Baci Italian Chocolates". That is a complete insult to anyone that has ever had the pleasure of having one of these in their mouth. Baci Perugina Imported Dark Chocolates with Hazelnut Filling is a staple for an Italian Christmas. You know it all too well; the blue box with stunning silver lining and the individually wrapped dark chocolates with the hazelnut filling. I am not a huge fan of dark chocolate most of the time; the Dove Dark and these are my usual downfalls. What makes the Baci such an incredible thing? Mere words can't begin to describe it. If you've ever had a toe curling, blood curdling scream filled orgasm that left you wrecked for ten minutes - well, a Baci is like that only a tad bit better.
Baci Imported Perugina Dark Chocolates
Packaged in a royal blue box with individual silver cavities for each piece of chocolate, these are the ultimate taste experience if you are into dark chocolate. The most common size is the five ounce gift box but if you really want to spoil someone, the 14.1 ounce box [28 pieces] is the way to go. Every year I get at least two or three different sizes of the Baci treats and they immediately get hidden. As much as I love the brood, to them "chocolate is chocolate" and they don't appreciate the quality of these.
The mouthfeel is incredible. The dark chocolate isn't bitter or strong and the crushed hazelnut center is Justas intoxicating. Even so, each piece has only 80 calories, 6 grams of carbohydrates and 1 gram of protein. These aren't small either; at 14 grams each its enough to put a dent in your sweet tooth but if you are like me, one is never enough. These are also called "Nipples of Venus" [Capezzoli di Venere] but that is more of a truffle without nuts so while they are similar, they are not the same thing. Because of the shape of them, they are often confused with the Nipples of Venus but rest assured, there is a big difference when it comes to taste.
To get the best taste from these, try having one after dinner with your coffee or tea. Even if they are a little on the hard side from sitting out in cooler weather, once you start to chew them, the taste is incredible. Couple that with the heat from the tea of coffee and you get a stunning bland of flavors. Be sure to unwrap these carefully as there is a small piece of paper inside with some type of inspirational or thought proving saying. While writing this review I ate five of these and here are a few of the sayings:
"The more I love you, the more you flee from me my darling"
"When writing of women, the pen should be dipped in a rainbow"
"The love is all there is, is all we know about Love"
The sayings are printed in Italian, English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
Please note; the smaller boxes are slightly different from the larger ones. The three, four and eight count Baci sets have windows cut into the boxes where as the larger ones are one solid cover.
Some stores will have these on sale in a loose display; Italian markets usually have them in boxes of various sizes as well as other Baci based gifts and treats. If you have a chocolate lover or are one yourself, this makes for an incredible gift. Be sure to check the ends of the boxes for the 'best by' date. When you unwrap one of these you may see a thin white coating on it; that is chocolate bloom no relation to Orlando though]. That happens when the temperatures change and some of the oil in the chocolate rises to the top. It is still completely edible and is just a reaction to heat or cold.
Prices on these vary; you can find the smaller boxes like the five ounce one for five to six dollars but you will pay a lot more if you are shopping in a trendy store. Check your local Italian grocery stores, they might charge a little more than what I pay for them in my area but it will still be less than gourmet stores. These are imported from Italy but made by Nestle Italiana so you know the quality standards that these have to pass through before they are imported.
Made from sugar, hazelnuts, unsweetened chocolate, cocoa butter, butterfat, milk and a few artificial ingredients, this is one of the finest dark chocolate candies you can buy without having take out a mortgage out on your house or selling off body parts. I don't know of a single person that has tried these and didn’t like them; even friends that aren't into chocolate have tasted these and fallen in love with them.
