Traveling through Millis and looking for a place to pick up a coffee and a bagel? Perhaps you want a sandwich for lunch? Try stopping by Bagels Best in Millis, Massachusetts. With over two dozen different bagel varieties this is a bagel store first and foremost, but they also offer a multitude of breakfast sandwiches (on bagels of course), along with lunch sandwiches (on bagels and breads) from a full deli counter and various salads.
Where is it? Whats it like
Located at 30 Milliston Road, Bagels Best is located in the Roche Brothers plaza in Millis, just off of Route 109. Its situated between the Hallmark Store and a Chinese restaurant and offers take-out service, but also has plenty of tables and chairs should you wish to sit and relax and eat right there. Since the plaza is quite big, theres plenty of free parking and besides a rush at lunchtime, you usually dont have to wait very long to put in your order.
Im not exactly sure what kind of design idea they were going for but it sort of reminds me of a modern design inside, but also industrial as the ceiling is open and all the equipment in the back is visible enough to be part of the overall setting. Seating is set along the side of the lobby area and in front of the store looking out across the parking lot. The seating in the front is along a high bar that lets you sit on a stool and stare out at the world while you are eating.
The entire restaurant is very clean, from the customer lobby to the back of the kitchen area (which you can see from the front). Ive been very impressed when I have stopped in at how clean it is.
Hours
Bagels Best is a breakfast and lunch kind of place. From Monday through Friday they are open from 6am to 4pm and on the weekends they are open from 7am to 3pm. You can get deli sandwiches any time if you need to.
Bagels
Oh I love bagels and this restaurant doesnt disappoint. They offer over two dozen different bagel varieties, including my favorite, the salt bagel (of course, my blood pressure doesnt like it). Theres also the standard plain bagel, along with others like cinnamon-raisin, apple-cinnamon, egg, and whole-grain.
I usually stick with the whole grain bagel when Im getting a sandwich, but they are all so good and freshly made each day right there in the restaurant. Every once and a while I will treat myself to a salt bagel, or some other bagel variety that grabs my fancy and I havent been disappointed yet.
Breakfast
My favorite is bacon, egg and cheese on pretty much any kind of bagel I just love it. Here they offer a number of different combinations with bacon, eggs, ham and cheese. You can choose the type of cheese they use too, which is a nice change from the generic cheese you get at places like Dunkin Donuts.
You can also get the bagel as it is (or toasted but why ruin a perfectly good bagel?) and have them put butter or cream cheese on it.
In addition to the bagels and the associated breakfast sandwiches, they have juice, soda and water available in a number of different coolers, Green Mountain Coffee available in several different varieties and different Espresso selections.
Lunch
Like I said, one handy feature of Bagels Best is you can get yourself a deli sandwich at any point during the day so if you were leaving early but knew you needed to pack a lunch, this is a handy place to pick up a sandwich.
That said, they offer pretty much any deli sandwich you can imagine. You can get the sandwich on a bagel or any other sort of bread you like, including a roll or a wrap. The cold cuts are all Boars Head brand and are good quality and the amount of meat, cheese and vegetables on the sandwiches is very good.
I tend to be simple with my deli sandwiches I like turkey and roast beef with mozzarella cheese and Ive been happy with the sandwiches that Ive gotten there.
There are also a couple of hot sandwiches including a bbq chicken sandwich and a chicken parmesan sandwich, along with a meatball sub. Besides being a bit messy, they do taste good.
If youre not in the sandwich mood at all, you can get yourself a salad as they have garden, chef and greek salad to choose from. On the garden salad you can get any number of different toppings including grilled chicken, tuna salad, hummus and egg salad.
Prices
Id consider the prices slightly higher than your typical bagel place, but not out of range for the various restaurants and sandwich places in the area. I just choked a bit when I got bacon, egg and cheese on a bagel along with a large coffee and it came out to close to $7.
Bagels are $0.85 each and a dozen is $5.95. The prices start going up when you start adding cream cheese or other spreads. For breakfast sandwiches, the full sandwich (with meat, egg and cheese on a bagel) is $3.99, while other combinations without the meat are slightly less expensive. For lunch both the deli and the hot sandwiches run between $5 to $7 and the salads are about the same, depending upon what kind of topping you get for them.
They only take cash too - so make sure you have enough on hand before you start ordering. There is a bank down a few stores in the plaza should you need an ATM.
Final Thoughts
This is a great place to stop by in the morning since parking is easy and the food is quite good. You can quickly go in, get your bagel and coffee and be back on your way without waiting in an endless drive-thru line. Even better, youre supporting a local company.
I stop by whenever Im traveling that way in the morning and Ive also stopped in to get sandwiches when Ive known Im going to need lunch that day. On all my visits Ive been impressed with the cleanliness and the attentive service. Not only that, I really like the bagels and everything else that they offer.
So if you like bagels or just want a great lunch spot, stop by Bagels Best.
