"So ummm, where did you get your tan?"
::exasperated sigh:: "CVS."
I used to be the queen of self-tanning lotions. Having lived on the East Coast for my entire life, I have become quite familiar with how narrow a time frame there is for bronzing myself up. Therefore, I decided to speed up the process. A la self tanning lotions. I have tried every thing under the sky from the good to the bad. Banana Boat has been the worst of them all.
I noticed that Epinions has two categories for this product - a medium and a dark. I believe I purchased the dark - heeeey - the darker the better, right? I have come to believe that it truly does not matter what type you purchase - the results are always the same. However there are recommendations for those with naturally paler skin tones (uhh, such as myself) to use the light-medium shades and those with naturally darker skin to use the darker shades. If you use a shade not recommended for your skin, your end result may be a miserable sun burn type appearance, but I have never had this experience. I fail to heed to the rules of Banana Boat, but as I said before, it truly doesn't matter.
Another factor of this brand is the type - lotion, spray, foam. Surprise, surprise I have tried all three!
Lotion: Probably your best bet, no matter what brand you use. It is just so much easier to have a concrete substance to spread on your body - it is visible when applying and more easy to tell if you have missed a spot. I have just found it more comfortable to use.
Spray: HORRENDOUS! I kept missing my legs when I tried to apply it. However, the next day my bathroom floor was a 'beautiful' shade of California bronze. The spray is outright difficult to use. Plus it is messy, it drips all over the place.
Foam: I just didn't like it. It is an improvement over the spray but not by much. It felt all dried up and reminded me of those Astronaut ice creams the always sell in museums. It made me think of trying to rub dried-out bubbles all over the place - not an easy task. I only had one experience with the foam tanner, because in my stupidity as I was making a multi-hour airplane trip over to England - I forgot to package my lotions, tanners, shampoos etc., in very compact bags. I was in quite the state at my destination as I realized that, similar to my bathroom floor, I now had a lovely 'orange' suitcase interior from bottle leakage. ALWAYS pack your self-tanners in a plastic bag with a 'good' seal on it.
I have never had a good experience with Banana Boat - which can only make one wonder, why the heck did I keep using it? How am I the master of knowledge in all three versions and in both shades? Who knows, I seem to never learn from my self-tanning experiences. What I have learned is that, despite the price, it is not worth the hassle. I have always ended up orange and streaky - in quite the obvious fashion. And believe me that it is not a pleasant experience to have to wear jeans in ninety degree heat just to avoid the stares of passerby at the highlighter colored epidermis.
The over-all quality of this brand is awful. The only purpose I can see for purchasing is the price - it's the cheapest of the cheap. If you want to stay low-cost I recommend Hawaiian Tropic instead. If you don't mind spending a little more money, Clinique and Estee Lauder are the best brands of all.
