| kent4489's Full Review: Banana Boat Surf Sunblock Lotion with Aquashield H... |
Ive just had a fantastic couple of days. After being Internet buddies for 6 ˝ years!, I finally met, in person, Epinions' famous ifif1938!!! In honor of our meeting, Ive decided to come out of Epinions retirement (if only briefly). (We met long before our Epinions' days, but it seems appropriate to honor her here as she is so well-known and loved on this site.) We spent 2 days together in "Paradise" on the SW Florida Gulf Coast. I thought it fitting to review a product needed and highly used in the area. Sunscreen products are an absolute must in the hot July FL sun as it is brutal on tender fair skin.
On with the review...
I arrived in FL 10 days ago, with little base tan. The first day, I got a slight sunburn on my back. My husband and I spend a lot of time boating when we are here and in the July heat, I dont want to have to cover up too much with clothing. I also dont like to have to bother with reapplying sunscreen often. So, off I went in search of a waterproof sunscreen that would last through a long day of boating and swimming.
Banana Boat products seem to be one of the predominent sun care products on all the shelves and Ive used and been pleased with many of their products. Also, the store where I was shopping had all Banana Boat products for 25% off, so I concentrated on finding one of their products. Looking at all their products, I came across Banana Boat SURF which states on the label that it is 8 hour waterproof. I decided this was the one to try as I should be able to put it on in the morning and pretty much be set for the day. I bought the SPF 30 and I believe they also had a SPF 45 in the Surf line.
Banana Boat SURF offers UVA & UVB Sunblock defense with Aquashield H2O protection. It instantly provides a waterproof shield and states that it protects from the moment you apply it. The tube states that the product is non-greasy and hypoallergenic.
Does is work and did I like it? Yes and yes! Since my back was already sunburned and we were planning a day out on the boat, I knew I needed to protect my skin. I had my husband apply it to my entire back and he said it was thick, but continued rubbing it in until the whitish color disappeared. It did not feel greasy in the least right after he finished applying. I tend to burn easily on my chest, so I applied to my chest area and I too thought it felt thick, but again, did not feel greasy once I had rubbed it in. The rest of my exposed skin was lightly tanned so I used a lower SPF sunscreen on other parts (and Banana Boat for Faces- SPF 23 on my face).
With my skin fully protected from sunburn, we headed out for a day of sun n fun in the beautiful waters of the Gulf of Mexico. As it turns out, we were only out for 3-4 hours, seems theres a storm nearly every afternoon here in the summer. However, we were out during midday when the suns rays are the strongest. We anchored the boat and jumped into the cool azure water. We spent an hour or so floating and swimming in the water. Since my skin on my back was slightly stinging from the sunburn I already had, I asked my husband if he thought the Banana Boat Surf sunscreen was working. He said he could see the water beading on my back and appeared to be truly waterproof. Over the next few days, we went out for many hours each day and it truly did protect my skin from further sunburn. Im convinced this product does provide many hours of waterproof protection.
The Banana Boat Surf sunscreen lotion is a white cream. It has little if any noticeable fragrance. It comes in a 6 oz. plastic tube. The product information does state to reapply after prolonged swimming, excessive perspiration, vigorous activity or towel drying. Personally, I did not find it necessary to reapply, but we were never out for more than 5 hours, although I did spend a lot of time in the water and I did towel dry. I was very satisfied with the protection provided by this product. My only suggestion to the company would be to produce this Surf product in a lower SPF. While the summer sun is strong in FL, in the winter I would like a lower SPF while still getting the excellent waterproof protection found in this product.

Back to Barbara, ifif1938... Well, she is a delight! No doubt, many of you think the same thing from knowing her on this site. What a wonderful, sweet lady with a great sense of humor. And her husband is a fabulous guy! We truly, truly enjoyed meeting them and spending time with them and hated to see them go. But shes off for a few days adventure to gather more information in order to add to her great travel reviews. Big hugs to you Barb, my dear Internet and now, real-life Pal! Here's to many more real-life meetings!
