A Concept That Works: Liquid Band-Aid

Written: Nov 26 '04 (Updated Nov 06 '05)
Pros:Easy to use, works for days, breathable, durable.
Cons:You have to use applicator wands, more expensive than Band-Aid strips.
The Bottom Line: This is a great product that works.

Why I got it.
I got this because I thought it was a cool idea. Since I like to try new things I decided to buy it. I was not disappointed.

What is it?
About 10 years ago veterinarians started using a type of superglue to stitch wounds. When our cat was declawed it had a similar substance used to seal the wounds.
Shortly there after it was approved by human usage (although I do not know if the chemical structure is the same for any of these, but the concept is.) It was used in surgeries to replace stitching. My wife actually had it used on a small incision and I feel this “glue” is superior to stitches.
This product takes the place of Band-Aid strips. Instead of a Band-Aid strip you simple have an opaque residue on your skin. It is similar to putting super-glue on your skin to cover and seal a cut but without the toxic chemicals.
This is the first product that I know of that was available for the average consumer.

How it works.
You have applicator wands provided in the package and a small bottle of the “glue”. The applicator wands are packaged in their own protective wrapper. Pull out the wand and apply the glue to the felt-like covering on the end of the applicator wand (around 4 drops.) It soaks it up quite readily. Then stroke the cut with the felt tip on the applicator wand. You can apply more glue to the applicator and repeat the process if you wish. It will take about 5 minutes for the glue to dry and it seems to take a little longer than that to completely cure.

How many applications per package.
There are ten applicator wands per package. You pretty much have to use the wand to get this product to work properly.

How well does it work?
I got this right before a camping trip 2 years ago. I thought it would be kind of cool to test out. Well I did get a cut in Zion, so after the cut stopped bleeding I went ahead and used this product. I applied it with the applicator two separate time at about 4 minutes apart. The result was a bump of glue that felt more like a wart than glue. It protected the wound very well for the next 4 days. On the fifth day I went ahead and reapplied it with the same positive results. The wound almost completely healed over the next 4 days.
In summary, this product worked better than I would have hoped. I have used it several times since then and it still works.

What it will not work on.
-Gaping, bleeding wounds.
-Very large wounds.

Does it sting?
I have had no issues with the product stinging. But make sure you thoroughly clean the wound before applying this product.

Is there a better alternative?
Not that I have found.

What I currently use.
For backpacking I still use Band-Aid strips and leave this stuff at home. It has too many parts for my taste. For car camping I always bring this along if I remember to pack it.

Things I like about this product.
-The wound can still breath.
-It is more protective than a strip.
-It only needs to be reapplied every few days.

Ingredients.
Formulated 2-Octyl Cyanoacrylate (containing paraben)

Summary
A great product that replaces small and medium sized Band-Aid strips. It seals and protects your wounds with a glue like substance. I highly recommend this product.
