| nicholaschin's Full Review: Bandai Digimon D-Power Digivice |
The D-Power Digivice is about 2x the size of the D-3. You have to shake it or attach it to your belt to play it. You can pick from 3 different digimon from season 3: Guilmon, Renamon and Terriermon. The cool thing about it is that it has a card slash feature.
Although it doesn't read the cards it counts the speed you swipe the card. A fast swipe will give your digimon a speed attack, a medium swipe will give you a sniper attack and a slow attack will give you a pover attack. If you are too slow or swipe wrongly you will get a normal attack. There are also cool animations for each different attack.
There are also different power ups that you can find. These power ups look like computer chips and you must press the A button as fast as you can to smash open the computer. There are 5 different power ups: speed, sniper, power, life and escape. These power ups will make your digimon use the power up attack and will always attack first.
Next, there are two games: digi catch and digi hunter. In digi catch there are moving stuff and you must catch them with the little arm (like the one where you get toys using the joystick that controls the robot arm). You have to target and attack the enemy in digi hunter. this is done by pressing the A and B buttons to target and C button to shoot.
The Digivice is quite large and needs a whole hand to hold. Its shape can also make it a little hard to hold. On the other hand there is a strap and a clip so you can hold the strap or clip it to your bag or something. It has 5 buttons on the front. 4 for playing the game and 1 for turning the LCD screen off and on. The screen will turn off if you don't press anything for 1 minute to save power. The thing uses 2 AAA battries unlike all the other digivices or hand held digimon interactive games. I guess this is because it uses a whole lot of power when connecting to the computer.
For connecting to the computer, a CD and a cable is included. one end of the cable looks like the 3.5 mm plug for headphones only smaller( its smaller so hyperactive kids don't plug their headphones into it). The installing of the software is easy enough but some people have problems. For those who have problems like me you can go to www.d-poweronline.com. There are some bug fixes there.
Although the D-Power can connect to the computer it can't connect to other digimon games because the connector is a different size. I have even tried to hotwire it to my D-3 but its smart enough to know it wasn't another D-power. It can only connect to other D-Powers.
I find this game good for kids over 6 to 20 and up. I have found adults interested in it. when I go around people keep looking at it and asking what it is maybe wanting to get it for their kids. Or t could be i am the first one to get it in the whole of Malaysia. It is not sold here AT ALL or in Asia for that matter. This is kinda a bad thing cause I have no one to battle with except people in the internet.
The D-power software has very good 3D graphics. It also has a digimon dictionary of about 370 digimon. I recommend getting this instead if a D-terminal because not only do you get the digimon dictionary, you also get a new D-Power Digivice! To battle online you need to connect your D-Power and upload your digimon to the computer. The computer takes note of your digimon stats, power, level etc. This is used for online battling. Unlike the other digivices, this one keeps track of your stats. The more you train the stronger your digimon gets. The cable link is also useful if you want to change battries because you can save your game on the computer so it doesn't get erased when you reset.
This game is good for killing time (half an hour goes by very fast with this) and for ALL Digimon fans. Although it is not very educational it makes you think about strategy: This digimon uses this attack, what should I use to counter this, what speed should i swipe the card, should I use power ups or should I save them for tougher enemys or run away? Some practice is also required to get card slashing right or to get the attack your digimon is strongest at. * Tip: some people might think that slashing with all their might will give a special attack but it usually wont. It is better to slash fast but not too fast around 0.12 seconds to 0.5 seconds for a special attack. Any slash faster than 0.12 seconds will result in a normal attack. *
