I sometimes think that my mother is just as bent on getting my daughter to love Barbies as I am, although I'm not sure why either of us is so dedicated to the cause. As a result, Beanie got a slew of dolls from the Fairytopia line, including two of my favorites, the Fairytopia Petal Pixies Fairies: Dreamie and Follie.
::: Dreamie & Follie Sitting in a Flower :::
Obviously, the two stars of the Fairytopia Petal Pixies Fairies: Dreamie and Follie set are the fairies themselves, which are just about 4½ inches from the tops of their heads to the tips of their pointed toes.. Dreamie has pink hair with pink sparkle strands scattered through it. She has violet painted eyes and a five-petal flower painted on her forehead. She is wearing a pink strapless petal-like dress with iridescent wings attached, and has long, skinny pink legs.
Follie has lavender hair with painted brown eyes and the same five-petal flower on her forehead. She is wearing an iridescent purple bikini top with matching wings attached and a rag-like matching skirt, and has long, skinny metallic purple legs.
Also included are their accessories: tiny pink and purple perfume bottles, butterfly-shaped mirrors (which Mattel stupidly taped down on the mirror sticker side so the mirror pulled off), and butterfly-shaped brushes. All these tiny accessories store inside the petals of their "dressing room:" a purple flower with two pink seats, a pink vanity with mirror, and leaf base. A glossy map of Fairytopia is also enclosed, which, of course, reverses to a pictorial of most of the other Fairytopia dolls and accessories available.
::: Close to Great, But It's The Little Things... :::
Mattel really went all out on this line, and someone in the itty bitty department must have remembered that little girls' moms were probably very into Little Kiddles and Dawn and Rock Flowers. Their tiny little features are absolutely adorable, and they have a unique look; they don't just look like miniaturized Barbies. Add in the teeny tiny accessories and the whole fairy theme and you'll have moms who grew up the 60s and 70s lining up to buy them.
However, this being Mattel, they always have to shoot themselves in the foot somewhere. First of all, the flower doesn't look so much like an actual flower as a rubberized version of some of the Capodimonte pretties my grandmother had lined up across the windowsill behind her plastic-covered couch. While I like the flashbacks to my childhood, that decor isn't one I like to recall. Secondly, since the designers apparently molded the flower directly from a casting of said Capodimonte, the scale is all wrong. While the fairies are sitting prettily in the picture, when it comes time for them to actually sit down and get to the business of beautifying themselves, you'll find that their legs hit each others, as well as the petals of the flower.
And my last complaint is the ridiculous amount of packaging cement that is involved for two little fairies and a flower. They have all the tiny pieces taped down, only the rocket scientists at Mattelhave them stupidly taped down on the mirror sticker side so the mirror pulled off. I was able to stick the reflective sticker back on, but with my usual luck, it will probably fall off in no time flat.
Still, this is the best job Mattel has done in eons. Beanie loves the fairies; Mommy loves the fairies; and aside from a few issues, the Fairytopia Petal Pixies Fairies: Dreamie and Follie set is something mommies and little girls will absolutely love.
