| mulan's Full Review: Barbie PC |
I'll just add a few pros for Mattel's kid computers to balance my earlier review on the striking differences between Barbie PC and HotWheels PC in the included software for the targeted female and male child market. While I do think a computer that is not type-cast as Barbie is more appropriate to a wider range of children, the Barbie PC may benefit some children. Especially if they really like Barbie. For some girls, it may make them more interested in computers than otherwise. But not all. And for some girls, the Barbie overkill may turn them off to the computer if they are not major Barbie fans. I think each parent and child should judge for themselves what kind of computer is appropriate. The Barbie PC is definitely more appropriate for the 6-8 year old who may not have much use for the computer outside of the software provided.
The Barbie PC, and HotWheels PC, are affordable at $599 and come with a lot of kiddie software. Most of the Barbie PC software are Barbie software, but nevertheless kid software. You can buy a regular computer for around $500, but it may cost a bundle to purchase the same number of software titles separately. I don't know if there are other computers targeted for the kid market, but it would be great to compare.
Again, I still think the discrepancy between the software provided for the HotWheels PC and the Barbie PC is disturbing.
Disclaimer: I am very much a fan of non-Barbie toys. I would prefer children to play with legos, tinker toys, building blocks, jigsaw puzzles, stuffed animals, and other dolls (with wider ranging identities).
