I have been thinking of buying the Barbie computer for my daughter, and saving it for a future birthday, so I checked out the opinions written here. There was only one, and after reading that one I decided I better take a closer look at the product.
Here is what I found. Mattel has definitely failed on equality for boys and girls on this one! The software that is included with the children’s PC’s have a big discrepancy between educational materials that they feel are required for boys vs. girls. There are almost two times MORE educational software titles for the boys… not to mention what “fun” software they felt to include for boys vs. girls (a lot more “fun” for the girls).
Here is the list of educational software’s that come with both PC’s
Girls Educational Software:
Compton®’s Encyclopedia 2000 Standard
Compton's 3D World Atlas™ Deluxe
Math Workshop™
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 10 Standard
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: The '90s
Ultimate Writing & Creativity Center
Boys Educational Software:
BodyWorks® 6.0
Compton’s® Encyclopedia 2000 Standard
The ClueFinders™ Math 9-12
Compton's 3D World Atlas™ Deluxe
Compton's® The Complete Reference Collection
Kid Pix® Studio™
Logical Journey of the Zoombinis®
Math Workshop™
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing® 10 Standard
NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC: The '90s
Ultimate Writing & Creativity Center
To be a little fair here, I have NOT purchased this product, so the quality may be there, I can’t comment on the operation and such… But I did feel strongly about this, so had to agree with the original reviewers opinion then add some.
I think I will just let Mattel keep their gender bias software packages that come with the PC’s, and buy a regular PC for my girl, and install the software I want her to have. A little creativity with decoupage, stenciling and decals… I think I can create a better package myself that my daughter will love b/c it will be original, and that she will get more out of! I do own Mattel products, and will continue to buy them, just not this one!
Please, do not hesitate to check this product out further, as I said, I do not own this product and can't say anything on ease of use, reliability, and operations. This may be a quality product as far as that's concerned. The gender bias thing though has turned me off to it.
