| smurf_tigger's Full Review: Barbie PC |
I bought the Barbie PC because I thought my daughter would enjoy it. And she does. It has been the best investment. initially, when I called in I was concerned about the price I was quoted on an upgraded "Signature" computer. I was wondering what happened to the $599.00? After talking with the representative she made me realize that in fact it was a good deal. I chose to get an upgraded computer with 466mhz(yes, i agree it could be higher but how much more does a kid really need)64mb ram, 10gb hard drive and a 40 speed CD-Rom. This also came with a 17" monitor and a printer(that matches and is very cute)and also some extra games. They even threw in a design certificate that my daughter her own Barbie with. She got so excited when it came to the door and it now proudly sits by the computer...as my daughter would say.
The reason I originally wrote this opinion, which admittedly I originally wrote as a response to an outrageous comment I had earlier read, was because I think it's important to look at the positive as well as the negatives. Yes it took a little longer than I would have liked. I am a NOW person but it was within reasonable time and my kids love it..even my boy has started picking at it.
I do agree that there is more educational software in the boys computer than the girls computer but Before I got upset I looked at the reasons why.I can accept the reasoning that there was considerably more Barbie software than Hot Wheels and I hope this helps other women see that they are by no means doing the female race an injustice by buying a Barbie Computer.I Did.My daughter is advanced, has actually skipped a grade in school because they felt she wasn't challenged and she jumped at the shot to get all that Barbie software!! Now, would I prefer that my daughters computer have the same exact software as the boys, sure. Would I sacrifice the Barbie software for it. No. I simply bought the software separately.
A comment was made in a previous message that talked about checking the website out and comparing software. Great Idea to that person! I noticed on very good thing, there are educational bundles for both kids!!!! I recently called and ordered educational software for my son that my 4 year old niece can use too.
I guess my point is that I heard a lot of comments about the systems, and Mattel being sexist. I played with Barbies when I was little and I turned into a successful career woman and mom. I have a better job than some men.The bottom line is that if you rely on a computer to do all your teaching you are headed for a grave mistake. I make a point to sit with my kids regardless of weather their computer has Barbie, Hot Wheels or Tweety and Sylvester on it. If my kids enjoy the system they will enjoy the programs that I put on it and that I sit with them and learn with them.
I am not saying that what some have to say is not unfounded but to make a blanket statement without getting the facts is why our society is still very much in the dark. We need to educate in the home not worry about the outside because ultimately what you teach your kids will stay with them longer than a computer. And on that final note, I think these computers are great. I got her a system with all kinds of great options that I know she will use for years. I don't belive it will be outdated any faster than the usual computer. My daughter has never watched so LITTLE television in her life and she is the better for it.
Thank you, Concerned Mum
