Pros: Longer shelf life, long wearing, natural coverage, no chemicals!
Cons: can be messy at first- gets better
I have been using Bare Minerals foundation (in fair) for about five years now. Like most people I saw the infomercial first, and my inner skeptic must have been having a weak moment, because I ended up ordering the fair skin foundation kit. (Which by the way- does not have the lightest color in it, those of us with super fair skin will need the lightest color which is #1 fair)
I work in a job where the look of my face is VERY important, and I have to keep it looking very good for long hours in various and continually changing environments, climate conditions, physical situations. This makeup keeps up, like none other- and let me tell you I have tried ALL the others. From the inexpensive 'all day wear' stuff in the drug store to the super pricey stuff off the counters at the high end stores. I cannot imagine going back to using any other foundation.
Before I started using this product, the last time I had a compliment on my skin was when I was in junior high. Now people compliment my skin all the time, and talk about how lucky I am that I don't hardly have to wear any makeup! For someone that has always dealt with acne, blotchy reddish skin, it is really nice to hear!
You get to choose your coverage level and it covers very well and makes you look like you don't have anything to cover in the first place! That's really the kicker that sells this product. It is not harmful to your skin, it will not clog up your pores like the spackle we've all used for years. You don't look all 'done up' when the makeup is applied, you look like YOU, only perfect. You look like you don't have any makeup on, and yet you still look very polished and professional. I talked my mother into trying it and she was super skeptical because everyone knows that powder makeups do not mix with wrinkles! She's been using the product for about 4.5 years now! I have combination skin with a tendency to be more oily. My mother has skin that tends to be a little more dry all over. This product is the most amazing thing either of us have ever tried!
Here's the scoop: you get a bit on the brush that comes with if you're buying the foundation kit (and if you're buying it by itself, get the kabuki brush) and swirl it around in the lid of the container. Keep swirling until all the minerals have been picked up into the brush. Now tap it on the edge of the lid to get the excess off. Start at the edge of your face at the top of your cheekbone and apply in a circular motion. It's always best to start with less and you can put more on if you need to. Here's a user tip: Save your nose for last so that the brush has already put the bulk of it's mineral content on the rest of your face, this way you avoid any of it piling up right around your nostrils.
This type of foundation does take some getting used to apart from the application described above. Frankly it can be very messy when you're starting out. The good news is that it cleans up easily and gets much better very quickly once you get used to using it. The swirling and tapping tend to cause little clouds of minerals to alight on your counter and sink. At first you don't notice, however after a couple of days you suddenly realize your counter is now the same color as your face. Again, it does clean up very easily- I just keep those super handy bathroom/kitchen wipes close by.
Give it a chance. Its little more expensive than the cheap cheap stuff, but it also lasts longer because it has a much longer shelf life than your foundation does and you're not having to use as much! Thinking you were just having a bad face day? Your liquid foundation has probably past it's prime!
This brand used to be hard to find when it first came out. However now that it has really grown in popularity; Ulta stores carry it, QVC is a regular carrier of the product as well as the Bare Minerals site itself, Sephora and even little salons and spas are carrying the product. Also as a little tip- check on eBay!!
