I became intrigued with the Bare Escentuals brand several years ago and have been slowly trying to make my way through all of their products. They introduce new products all the time, so it's not been an easy (or inexpensive!) task. Quite often, I will purchase a themed collection from QVC that includes several different products (for example, a blush, an eyeshadow, an eye glimmer, a special face powder, as well as a few face brushes) at a price that is far cheaper than it would be if you were to purchase the products separately. Purchasing one of these collections is what introduced me to Bare Escentuals Blush, and I've been using it ever since.
Product Details:
Bare Escentuals Blush is one of the products in Bare Escentuals' i.d. line, which are cosmetic products made from pure crushed minerals from the earth. The founder of the company, Leslie Blodgett, tells us while on QVC hawking her products, that her cosmetics made from minerals are so pure, you can sleep in them. According to QVC.com, the blush contains no preservatives, fragrance, oils, emulsifiers or additives.
The blush comes in a clear, plastic jar with a black plastic, screw-on lid. The jar has a "sifter" top, which is a plastic covering with small holes in it where the blush comes out. This means that you aren't faced with an entire open jar of blush (which would be begging for a spill!).
There is one "regular" size of Bare Escentuals blush, which is .03 oz. However, the multi-product collections from QVC contain smaller, .02 oz. jars. The .02 oz. jars have the same type of packaging (as well as the sifter top) as the .03 oz. jars, but is smaller.
There are several shades of Bare Escentuals Blush to choose from. Some are slightly shimmery and some are matte. The shades are: Thistle, Sorbet, Dawn, Maple, Tulip, Sedona, Golden Gate, Flowers, Port, I'm Amused Rouge, Heaven, Dusk, Beauty, Bronze, Pearl, Fresh, Velvet, Joyous Jennifer, Horizon, Fruit Cocktail, Chestnut, Crushed Velvet, Hint, Giddy Pink, Aubergine, Chestnut, Secret and Escape. Some of these shades can be seen at Sephora.com.
Ingredients (taken from packaging):
Bismuth Oxychloride, mica, iron oxides.
My Experience:
At first, I was intimidated by the entire Bare Escentuals cosmetics line because I wasn't used to the loose powder-type of cosmetic. I didn't understand the concept of using just a tiny amount of these loose minerals at a time and that this super small amount would go a long way. After applying way too much the first several times (because, like a big dope, I dipped my blush brush into the little container of minerals, tapped the brush and applied..the dipping of the brush into the container is a big no-no. It wastes the product and causes way too much to be applied to the cheeks), I finally got the "take the lid off the little tub, swirl the brush into the small amount clinging to the lid, tap off the excess, and apply to cheeks" method of application. That is truly the best way to apply Bare Escentuals Blush - it's easy, efficient, doesn't waste the product.
The first shade of Bare Escentuals Blush I tried was Pearl, which is the prettiest shade of rosey mauve I've ever seen. It has super-fine silver shimmer particles in it, giving it a hint of shimmer. It was (and continues to be) my holy grail blush right from the start. Over the course of the past few years, however, I've tried a few other shades, including Compassion (which may be a QVC-exclusive shade, and is a medium plum shade with slight shimmer), Golden Gate (a slightly shimmery, medium peachy pink) and Thistle, (a shimmery, mauvey pink with a slight brown note).
If you use the correct method of application of the Bare Escentuals Blush, you will have the best luck with this blush. It will help you to apply a smaller amount, thus giving the cheeks a gentle wash of sheer color. If the color is not dark enough or is too sheer, you can apply another layer to get the desired effect. The fact that this blush is layerable is one of the best things about it.
Bare Escentuals Blush is comfortable and easy to wear. It's light and sheer, so you never feel it on your skin. It can be applied over or under a face powder, and can also be used over or under any of Bare Escentuals' face highlighting powders, such as Clear Radiance or Warmth. The look once applied is not powdery or chalky. It's sheer, radiant and beautiful.
Any skin type should be able to wear Bare Escentuals Blush. Because it's a powder, oily skin types should be able to wear this with no problem. Dry skin types should also be able to wear it. My skin can be dry in the winter months, and I've had no problems with the blush looking too chalky or making my skin look more dry than it already was.
The wear of Bare Escentuals Blush is very good. I rarely need to re-apply, and when I do, I can always attribute this to the fact that I have either rubbed it off during the day or have been sweating a lot. This blush is not transfer-resistant or long-wearing (at least Bare Escentuals doesn't make these claims), but it still wears pretty well for a "normal" (non-long-wearing) blush.
Overall, this blush is really great. It gives the cheeks a natural, blushing look and comes in so many different shades that you will likely find two or three that you will love. The little pot is big enough to last you at least an entire year.
Price and Purchasing Information:
Bare Escentuals Blush is $18.00 no matter where it is purchased. It can be purchased online at QVC.com, Sephora.com, and SkinStore.com. I recommend purchasing from QVC.com because they have an unconditional, 30-day money-back guarantee, which means that you can use as much of the blush you want and if you still don't like it, you can return it for a full refund plus your original shipping cost. This blush can also be purchased at Bare Escentuals boutiques and some Sephora brick and mortar stores.
