Barker Creek Publishing and Lasting Lessons birthday bookmark is a sure winner. Child pleasing colors and image including an orange border, with small grinning rabbit wearing a green and orange stripe party hat cause this book  mark to be prized by Osage County First Grade.  Rabbit is holding a tiered birthday cake, decorated with swirls, and dots and a candle.  Balloons in blue, purple, green, yellow and red are shown above the rabbit’s head, with the words Happy Birthday in yellow appearing above all.  Rabbit’s ears and nose are magenta, a large purple band is shown directly behind rabbit, with a slender green line separating the orange and purple bands.

I find that as Emergent Readers begin to figure out words and phrases as they are used in text, a high-quality, robust bookmark can be very useful.  If you cannot establish words on the page without difficulty; it is often difficult for Little Readers to verify procedural, connotative, and allegorical word meanings as is obligatory per national Core Standards.

A good bookmark helps Emergent Readers stay on the proper line of text, and looking at the correct word as we read together to appraise how unequivocal word usage forms the connotation or tone of the sentence.  Bookmarks help Emergent Readers find words and phrases in stories or poems that imply emotions or appeal to the senses as is mandatory by Core Standards for First Grade readers.

I like book marks, and have used and continue to use them a good bit in the classroom.  Not only do book marks make excellent little awards as Osage County First Grade concludes a story or book, book marks are dandy for marking the place where we were reading so we do not bend down corners or lay the book on its open side.  Above all, book marks can be just plain fun to have. 

From time to time trying to locate a word on the page can be a chore exacerbated by trying to figure out what the word might say and mean.  Little Learners have a lot expected of them, and they try hard to meet the expectations.

Early on in the school year Emergent Readers must grow a sense of Print Awareness as is obligatory by State Instructional Standards.  Osage County First Grade uses markers to increase the talent for understanding how print works. Print Awareness includes knowing that the letters on the page represent.  Words will to be read aloud, vagaries between diverse forms and rationales of print will be distinguished, including story books, dictionaries, essays, personal letters and signs.

Little Readers use their bookmarks as they apply many approaches to work out, deduce, analyze, understand, and respond to an assortment of texts as is required by state teaching standards.  Book marks help Little Readers continue on track, on the correct line, looking at the proper word and reading from left to right, top to bottom, tracking print as copy is being read in addition to becoming vigilant to the difference between letters, words, and sentences.
