Oh!  What a fun, fun, fun bookmark for Osage County First Grade.  As excitement reaches fever pitch during December; program practice, count down to Christmas, thinking about Santa and presents and going to G’ma’s house and presents, and lots of good food, and presents, and First Grade party day, and presents… it is really difficult to keep Little Readers reading.

Certain to bring smiles to Little Learner faces; this cheerful reindeer typifies the joy of the holiday season.  Appearing as plain white bookmarks imprinted with a black line drawing to commemorate the holiday season; these markers are viewed with much exhilaration by Osage County First Grade.

Happy Holidays is a characteristic format bookmark used by Osage County First Grade to help mark the place on the page of text as we read.  The edge of the marker is bordered with Holiday Lights; these extend right onto Reindeer’s antlers.  Reindeer is a jaunty fellow  standing in a snowdrift with his big bow, cheery expression and perky demeanor.

At the bottom of the marker is a snowscape with the words Happy Holidays! emblazoned across the breadth of the bookmark.

The Create to Celebrate Bookmarks help keep focused upon classroom activities; Osage County First Grade busily decorates with colored pencils and then uses their dashing Reindeer as we spread our time between the program practice and actual classroom time during the last two weeks before the bigHolidaybreak.

The new school term begins in August.  ByDecemberOsageCountyFirst Grade recognizes many letters and sounds, can read many CV, CVC words and has begun to decode words and phrases with growing facility as words are used in a text. Readingwith fluency; while locating particular expressions and expressions involving emotion aroused by the reading or ones to pique the intellect in passages or in verse, is an essential, Language Arts,Reading, component required by State Core Standards for First Grade.

I find first-class, robust bookmarks to be very useful as Emergent Readers begin that hard work of making sense out of the iggles and squiggles we call letters and words; and Reindeer helps keep Emergent Readers on track despite the excitement of the Holiday Season.  Bookmarks help Emergent Readers continue reading on the right line of text, observing the exact word as the class reads together.  To add another layer of difficulty; Little Readers must not only create logic for the words used; but must become skilled at calculating how unambiguous word medleys shape the nuance or character of the sentence. 

While Osage County First Grade does not add tassels or ribbons to the markers we use at school; embellishments can be added to bookmarks completed at home for use as gifts for family and friends.  Osage County First Grade does use colored pencils to tint the image and letters forming the Reindeer book marks, and, Little Readers willingly use their markers during class time reading sessions.  Reindeer is taken home on the last day before our Holiday Break.

Uses for these bookmarks include using them as small reading awards for adding to pinning boards, adding to the holiday party bags as a small token gift, using them as gift tags for placing on presents under the tree, or even as a name tag during the frantic days just before the winter  holiday.
