| Wovoka's Full Review: Barney's Gourmet Hamburgers |
Hands down, the Barney's chain - yes, chain - serves up the best and most variety of burgers in the Bay Area! There are several Barney's in San Francisco (in Noe and the Marina) as well as across the Bay in Berkeley (2) and Oakland. Berkeley's Barney's outlets are located on the shopping and restaurant-laden Solano Avenue and on Shattuck in North Berkeley; Oakland's slices of burger heaven are located on both College Ave. (near Zachary's Pizza) and Piedmont Ave. (down from Fenton's Creamery). I've only been to the East Bay Barney's locations and my review is based upon my experiences with these.
The menus are diverse offerings of hefty traditional beef burgers, grilled chicken breasts, ground turkey burgers, and veggie burgers. There are also salads and a small selection of sandwiches, but this is a BURGER place - save the salads/sandwiches for other places. My recommendation is to enjoy the good life with your choice of juicy burger, gooey cheese and other delicious condiments and toppings, a large order of spicy curly fries to share. For some reason unbeknownst to this transplanted East Coaster, the fries come with ranch dressing - for dipping. Gimmee the ketchup, already! For onion ring lovers, Barney's version has disappointed me - a little on the soggy side. The milkshakes are good and thick - try coffee flavor.
"Have it your way" is a slogan for a burger chain, but Barney's means it. The menu has an array of different kinds of "burgers" - from your basic cheese to the French burger (served on a french roll with blue cheese)to the Hawaiian burger (pineapple) to my personal favorite, the Hickory turkey burger (melted cheddar cheese, BBQ sauce, and a load of meaty bacon). Hey, this isn't health food, so might as well go for plenty of damage!
The atmosphere is loud, casual, and modest - this is a burger joint, after all. The service is fast and efficient.
I don't think reservations are taken, so there are small waits for tables during peak dining hours. I call ahead to order and do take out more than I've eaten in the restaurant.
Costs per burger range from about $4 - $7; together with curly fries and a shake, per person costs will be around $12ish.
Good, filling and inexpensive - Barney's hits the spot for burger lovers in the Bay Area!
