| livnkarismom's Full Review: Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Maker |
My daughter received the Baskins Robbins Ice Cream Maker for her birthday just last week. Being a huge, huge ice cream lover Olivia could not wait to make her very own ice cream. Alas, half and half is not exactly a staple in our home and she had to wait until we could get to the store - the one con of this ice cream maker.
Aside from having to use half and half, ice cream making is a breeze with this machine. Granted, when we first opened the box I seriously doubted the quality of the ice cream that would be produced. I was quite happily wrong - it was great ice cream and freezing cold to boot!! Everything you need is included with the play set except for ice, half and half, salt and water.
The assembly was quite simple as it only involved putting the pieces where they belong in the actual 'display' of the ice cream maker. The ice cream maker comes with 2 ice cream mixes (Silly Vanilli and Bubble Gum) complete with toppings (Nerds and bubble gum bits) and 2 packages of sprinkles (chocolate and rainbow). You also get 4 Baskin Robbins paper ice cream cups and eight tiny 'tester' type spoons. There's even a little divided container for your sprinkles and a cookie cruncher so you could add your favorite cookie topping.
The actual ice cream making takes a bit longer than the instructions state. However, I am of the opinion that the wait is definitely worth it for do-it-yourself ice cream! The ice cream does not come out all creamy, but rather in a shaved form as you scrape it from the outside of the metal tumbler filled with ice, water and salt. That aspect does make it rather difficult and a tad messy to scoop into the little bowls, but would honestly expect all neatness and perfection from a child's ice cream maker? Not I! The quantity was wonderful for this family of four's afternoon snack, too!
All of the pieces of the ice cream maker can be washed with soap and water which makes for easy clean up. I do recommend using this on the kitchen counter as it can get a bit messy with melting ice cream. The mess was not such that it makes you not want to do this again and again though. Just wait until your hand stops aching from turning and turning and turning that crank - ahhh, the good ole' fashion way of making ice cream!
My daughter also received two more boxes of mixes - including a Berry Licious (can't wait to try that one!) flavor - and toppings. This is certainly an item that could last in our household full of ice cream lovers! And I know it's durable because today, after washing, I had it stacked high in my drainer and it fell onto my ceramic tile floor without so much as a crack or chip.
For great old fashioned ice cream making and fun for the whole family of ice cream lovers, I would certainly recommend the Baskin Robbins Ice Cream Maker!
