The Bottom Line: A fun book that is very easy for beginner readers. You will find that you can't read just one Biscuit book without wanting to read more.
jadzia66's Full Review: Alyssa Capucilli - Bathtime for Biscuit
My oldest daughter loved library day at school. She loved it so much that I'm enrolling her in a summer reading program with our local public library. The only problem I've ever had with her about the library was when she would like a book so much that she wouldn't want to return it. Bathtime for Biscuit was one such book.
All About Bathtime for Biscuit
Bathtime for Biscuit is a 28 page softcover book that is written by Alyssa Satin Capucilli and illustrated by Pat Schories. It was published by Scholastic Inc. and arranged by HarperCollins Publishers. It's copyright date is 1998 and it has an ISBN # of 0-439-74405-9.
The Story
Biscuit is a puppy who is in desperate need of a bath. Biscuit's owner is a little girl and she tries her best to give him a bath. Instead, Biscuit plays with the towel, digs in the dirt and rolls around in the grass. The little girl manages to drag Biscuit into the bath but he escapes minutes later when he decides to follow his friend Puddles. Together, Biscuit and Puddles play in the sprinkler, dig in the mud and roll around in the flower bed. By the time the little girl chases Biscuit down, all three of them are now dirty and could use a good cleaning.
Why We Recommend Bathtime for Biscuit
At my daughter's school and in fact, probably in most elementary schools in the country, they get Scholastic Book Club booklets every month. I always let Courtney pick out a couple of books and when we saw Bathtime for Biscuit in one of them, we immediately ordered it because she loved the library book so much earlier in the year. That was just the beginning of her Biscuit book collection as she now has about 7 or 8 different Biscuit books and I'm sure when she goes back to school in the fall we'll order more as we come across them.
What is so appealing about Bathtime for Biscuit? The simplicity of the writing for one. My 6 year old has no trouble at all reading this book. Every word is in large print and easy to read. What Courtney really likes is how Biscuit says "Woof Woof" and Puddles says "Bow Wow". When we read the book together we try to give Biscuit and Puddles different doggy voices. Another thing we like about Bathtime for Biscuit is that we have a Basset Hound who doesn't like baths so we can completely relate to the little girl's troubles giving her own dog a bath.
All in all, Bathtime for Biscuit is an excellent book for beginner readers. The words are large, simple and easy to read. The illustrations are cute and your child will have a fun time reading about this silly puppy and all the mischief he gets into.
