Pros: Variety of music styles, rather easy controls
Cons: Lacks depth, no decent country music
The Bottom Line: Might entertain those looking for an easy control style music game, but it will disappoint most who have ever enjoyed a peripheral music game like Rock Band or Guitar Hero.
kjscrafts's Full Review: Battle Of The Bands for Nintendo Wii
This is basically like the Guitar Hero and Rock Band games in that you do actions in the beat with the music. It is entirely battling other bands as you play, though, and their is no just playing the music on your own option, as even as single player you battle against a computer band. The controls are also quite dull in comparision to the other two game series, as there are no peripherals and you do not even use the nunchuck. The controls are not horrible, but it just is not as good and will probably bore you if you are used to either of the other series.
This game has one main pro of it having the songs play in different music genre tunes, such as rock, hip hop, country, latin, and marching band. This is what attracted me to it, but I was quickly very disappointed because it really seems they are mostly rock songs and the only country is the changing of the background music to make the songs seems country. As a country music lover I was disappointed in this pretending to have country and not really having any decent actual country songs. It is still interesting to hear songs played in a different music style than normal.
The game's controls work pretty simple with you just moving the Wii remote left, right, and down to get the different notes as they scroll by. This took some getting used to for me, but it does seem to have an easier learning curve than the instrument peripherals, so this may be an easier game for those that are not as coordinated or want to be able to learn to play decent faster. The only other movements are going forward to stab a beat and shaking side to side when there is a line (basically the equivalent of holding a note in the other games).
The biggest down for this game, though, is its lack of depth. There are only 30 songs and playing through the whole story mode can take most only a few hours. Not to mention the plot for the story mode is pretty much non-existant with very little plot connecting the band battles. I imagine there might be some depth to it if you have some people to enjoy battling with, but I suspect you will enjoy yourselves more and for longer if instead invest in a Rock Band or Guitar Hero game.
