| eersnherd's Full Review: Battlefield 1942: The Road to Rome Books |
When Battlefield 1942 came out in 2002, it quickly revolutionized the first-person shooter genre and shifted the strategy from individual/deathmatch centered to one that requires a more team-based approach. When one jumps into the game, one may feel overwhelmed due to the sheer number of options and strategies that present themselves ranging from which class should I be (scout, engineer, etc), which vehicle should I command, what does each vehicle do, what are the weaknesses of each, etc etc. The list could go on and on thanks in part to the fact that DICE/EA neglected to create a worthwhile manual to go along with the game. That said, thankfully the folks at Prima took the time to take the novice gamer into mind.
Let me start by saying that this is one of the most informative strategy guides that I have ever had the pleasure of reading. Within the massive 336 pages of text, the reader finds easy to read instructions and hints on the various nuances found in the game.
The book begins by devoting no less than 68 pages to discussing basic movement, game concepts, troop kits (which class you are and what weapons you have), and vehicles (from the Jeep to the Tiger tank), going into great detail about strategies for each (such as avoiding getting hit from behind while in a tank, as that is where its armor is the weakest).
Now that you have a basic understanding of the vehicles included in the game, the strategy guide shifts its focus into detailing each of the different battles. No less than 10 pages is devoted to each of the 22 battlefields (including those in the Road to Rome expansion pack), coming to a total of 255 pages.
Each battle is introduced with a historical overview, detailing the significance of the battle in WW2, after which, one finds a summary of the general gist of the map. Most noticeable is the huge map that shows the actual battlefield and where everything is (first aid kits, ammo boxes, bases, repair platforms, and every vehicle). This alone, IMO is worth buying the guide, as you can quickly get lost in the heat of a battle and wonder to yourself where the nearest ammo box is so you are not a sitting duck.
Surprisingly, Prima even goes into detail about every base/control point that is present on the map. A list of vehicles, defensive features, and other objects is included as well.
Now you know where everything is, so what do you do with it? The guide discusses various strategies in excellent detail for both the Axis and the Allies. It is from this book that I have learned many of the techniques I use today.
This book is definitely worth the $20 you pay for it. Thank you Prima Games for a strategy guide well done! It is a must have for any fan of the game be it beginner or die hard addict. It is a pleasant and easy read, with plenty of pictures, diagrams, and tables to deliver the information you need quickly and effectively.
